Default Bose car audio?

Given the general negative vibe about Bose products on this ng I was
wondering if anyone has any experience of living with Bose car audio
products?

I'm about to order an Audi which, for a few hundred quid, can be
upgraded to include a 'Bose Premium' amp/speakers. This also includes
the Bose 'noise reduction' system which, according to the Bose web
site, compensates for ambient/road noise.

I've only had a 5 minute demo of this add-on and, to be honest, I
couldn't really detect much of a real difference between the Audi
'Concert II' stereo system with or without the Bose options. Given
that it's a £400 option, I'm erring toward not specifying it and
sticking with the default stereo

Any opinions?

The standard Audi setup sounds better than the Bose in my experience.

I had a Volvo which had Bose speakers once - sounded very good. (Not sure I
would spend 400 spons for the privelege though - car audio just ain't that
important to me.)

A few years back I had occasion to be buying an Audi summat or other (pretty
low down the foodchain - 100?) and a Mazda 626 at the same time. While both
cars were similarly priced to start with, a quick exercise with the Audi
price list showed that it would have cost (at the time) an extra £1,800 to
bring the Audio up to the 'standard spec' of the Mazda. (A fair chunk of
this was the bloody radio.....!!)

Can't remember for sure - 340 GLE or summat? It was 1.7 lt and top spec,
IIRC. (Damn nice little car....)

('Once' = a good number of years and a good number of cars ago....)

I have such a Bose system in my MB and the auto-adjustment system is
very annoying and it is not possible to disable it without surgery.
Sound is only OK, so I'd stick with the standard system.
