Roksan Kandy Phono
I purchased the integrated Kandy and Radius5 at the same time a year
ago from the dealer. For the past year it has been performing wonderfully, but recently the phono section of the amp has started to have some issues. (erraneous electrical noises). I have narrowed it to the phono section as no other inputs display these symptoms. Sometimes when switching on the amp from stand-by the phono section will not produce a sound until I recycle the power of the full unit. Do these amps have a history of the phono sections having to be replaced or having problems? thanks John in Sydney Australia |

I can have a look but I don't think so. Recycling the power would have
no affect... |

They have a history with one person in this group being told 'we put the money in the power supply' when he contacted them (Henley/Roksan?) with 'quality issues' and expressed his disappointment with the phono stage on a Kandy amp, IIRC.... |

It may do since there may be a current surge, or a temporaily large bias in the relevant places that can 'break down' the barrier of a poor contact. Above said, I've no idea if this is the reason in the case you report. Indeed, that was me. I couldn't get over how bad the MM phono stage was when compared to a standalone solid state (Project and Musical Fidelity) - muffled with little treble. And yes - Roksan's reply was, more or less, the MM stage is junk, we know, buy our outboard phono stage. I wasn't impressed with it otherwise - irritating input switching, shoddy controls/remote and worst-of-SS-shrillness/lack of low bass. It did, however, go very loud indeed. Sold it on ebay for 10UKP less than retail. Rob |

Otherwise, I can't see the point of them, the afore-mentioned POS amp cost a *tenth* of the price of a Kandy and does much the same job, albeit with a lower power output. The re-emergence of Phono Stages on integrated amps is a Very Good Thing in my book, but once again I don't see the point if they are too poor to use!?? My advice to anyone wanting a decent amp would be to buy cheap today (Argos? Richer? eBay?) and save hard to get summat a bit better than these 'budget mid-fi' amps which seem to do a lot, but none of it very well?? By way of illustration, these two tracks (taken from the same 1958 mono LP) were recorded with 'mature' secondhand kit that (disregarding the computer used for the recording) recently cost less than 60 quid *total* - Pioneer SA-510 amp c/w with its own phono stage and a Technics SL-3200 DD deck c/w Ortofon VMS30 Mk II mm cart!! http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show...0Mi%20Amor.mp3 http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/10%20Cindy.mp3 Not everybody's cuppa tea I dare say and perhaps none too posh (no cleaning up), but a good example of the sort of VFM than can be had at the lower end of the foodchain!! (G'wan, admit it - it's been a while since you heard any Calypso music ain't it? ;-) |
