Marantz TT-130 cueing not working
 

Hi,
Having just bought some Marantz separates including a TT-130 turntable I
note from the manual that the cueing switch should allow the arm/stylus to
drop gently onto the record. At present the cueing is a straight (stylus
busting) drop - would this be lack of oil to dampen the thing or what ? I'd
be very grateful as although stylii for these decks are not that expensive I
can't afford to have them go too often

Hi Tony, I am not familar with the TT-130 but have had some experience with
other turntables.

It is possible that the dampening device is as simple as a pin through a
sleeve with a spring to return it to the up position. The slow drop relies
upon the right type and viscosity of "grease" (for want of a better word)
between the pin and sleeve. The "grease" can become contaminated (dust, etc)
and dry out, and in your instance has more then likely resulted in the pin
sticking in the down position. It is also possible that the spring that
returns the pin to the up position has dislodged or is broken. The spring
may be above the sleeve pushing onto a circlip that is fitted into a groove
at the top of the pin.

If the pin is seized it should be possible to loosen it by putting a few
drops of a lubricant solvent (WD-40 will do the job) around the pin/sleeve
interface, letting it soak for a while, and then trying to loosen the pin by
pushing it up and down. If extremely tight (it does happen) you may be able
to initially rotate the pin with pliers, however, if you need to do this
don't mark or deform the pin as it then won't slide through the sleeve. Use
plastic tube around the pin and grip this with the pliers.

Once you have the pin loose you need to dry out any solvent and introduce
something into the clearance between the pin and bush to reproduce the
characteristics the damper had before. I have used silicon oils/greases,
however, others here may have knowledgeof better products for this
application

**As APR has stated, the oil has leaked from the cueing mech. It is not
rocket science, but it can be a PITA to work on and obtain the correct oil.
It is VERY important to use the correct oil. It is not grease. The stuff is
a silicon oil with a very high viscosity. I have plenty here, as do most
techs who work on turntables. I suggest you find one locally, because you
usually need to buy around 100ml of the stuff. 100ml would last a
professional about 100 years.
