Firewood Horns Vs. Tannoys
Just in case anyone is interested..... A conversation with one here had me looking at Ebay for a pair of Tannoy 609s and I found a pair with only a couple of hours to go (as you do..) - I grabbed them for a *midweek bargain price* to compare them and, ultimately, rip the drivers out of them for a speaker project. (Believe me, it ain't the drivers muchachos - it's the cabinets...) Well, for a kick-off (oops), ripping them apart is out of the question - they are far too good for that. So it's a case of comparing them with the Firewood Horns... http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/speakers.JPG The Jerichos (new, improved with different drivers) hump them off in a heartbeat as they would a lot off stuff I expect, but the Pinkies (Buschhorn Mk 2) and the Tannoys are so damn similar I cannot yet put one before the other. A couple of visitors (including one here) have been unable to pick a 'best' yet either - including a Tannoy owner and advocate. For 'similar' read different - the image moves back and forth, but the range is strangely similar and clarity/bass supremacy kinda swaps back and forth on different sources/music, but once away from them (throughout the house) it's impossible to tell which ones are on, if you don't actually *know*....!!! Bad for Tannoy? - No, they are *super* speakers. Good for the Pinkies? - You tell me..... |

The 609 is not regarded as a "proper" Tannoy:-) It was near the bottom of the range, had an 8 inch driver and was produced for a very short time some 15 years ago IIRC. If you are interested in "serious" Tannoys, you should audition something from the Prestige series, Keith. For example the Westminster Royals, a horn-loaded design with their 15 inch dual concentric driver, and a cabinet of 535 litres. Now they *are* impressive. Sensitivity 99dB and a response 16Hz to 22kHz (-6dB) A musician acquaintance in Sweden has sold his Quad electrostatics and bought a pair of these. He is now "rediscovering" his LP/CD collection, and the single chair which was set up on blocks in the narrow sweet spot has been replaced by a huge four-seater leather sofa. Two firm favourites from the oldies range are the Canterbury and the Lancaster. There is a new version of the Canterbury, which I have heard on several occasion, and like very much. One of the most sought after of the old models is the GRF - many owners of SET systems buy them. There is a modern version of this available. I have no idea what the new ones cost, but the originals in good condition go for the price of a new family car, and are sold as soon as they appear. The push pull "heavies" go for the Lockwood Major Serious doo=dah!.. (15" Tannoy Dual concentric) There were a lot of these built, and many are still in daily use in studios. They are rarely seen for sale second hand. And I near enough gave my 15" monitor Golds away:(((((((((((((((((( I have four pairs of Tannoy Red Monitors, with 12" dual concentrics, which I bought for silly money from an audio post production facility that was relocating. I use two pairs in parallel in my workshop. Jethro Tull like you never heard it befo-) I bet!..... Iain -- Tony Sayer |

The Monitor Gold owners probably look down their noses at you, just as you do at us, and we do at those whose Tannoys are not even DCs. Better to put one at each corner and listen to some DVD-Audio 4-channel remasters. -- Eiron No good deed ever goes unpunished. |

(Probably ****e but, boy don't it just wind people up when you mention you've got Lowthers!! :-)) |

The Turnberrys are *excellent*. A good friend of mine, a music teacher, has a pair. He didn't sleep for three nights after they were delivered:-) It would be interesting to compare them with the original Lancasters, but as he and I live 300 kms apart, the logistics are not simple to arrange. I am told, there are more pairs of Westminsters in Sweden than in the UK. Lowther has a strong following there too. Smart people these Svenssons:-) Iain |
