Default Problem with Quad remotes

I am the proud owner of a Quad CD99 CD-P player, its Pre-amp, the 909
power amp feeding the latest 989 ESL Speakers.
However, from the start I have had a problem with the remotes, the one
that came with the 99 can control everything, except the volume for
which I have to go to the other one, I presume the one that came with
the amp (?). In any case I have two and I am told that one remote should
work all the system. When I said it did not do so I was told they were
not wired or connected together correctly so the local tech came down to
me and at the same time got on the phone to Quad, (Rob, for those that
are familiar with the staff in the UK), and they "compared notes".
Never mind, the next day I was still unable to use only one remote and
was prepared to live with it for now, However, today I found that
whereas one remote used to switch the whole system on, now it does not
switch on the preamp and now to cap it all, the preamp is starting to
switch itself off every now and again, what's going on? I will of course
get in the local dealer again but since I had heard there had been
problems with Quad remote controls units I thought I might see if anyone
has had similar problems with Quad.

Thanks Dave, my local tech suggested that the remotes were very
directional, i.e. it was critical to point them accurately at the units.
I almost blew up, I told him I had got down on my knees while pointing
them, aimed them like a gun, went in close, went outside the door,
jabbed them in the direction of the units, took them out and tested the
batteries, re-booted the units, removed my mobile phone from the scene,
turned off the low voltage lights, pulled the curtains.......then I
phoned Rob.
He said he may need them in for a "soak test" and it was then I realised
I never tried water......;--))))
