Quad 405: dud electros ?
Hi to all the Quad fans, I have been refurbishing a circa 1977, Quad 405 that has been long out of use. The dark red, PCB electros were found to have all completely failed - the 47 uF and 100uF ones on the amp PCBs tested virtually open circuit. The 10uF, 40 volt bi-polar ones on the triac PCB had depolarised, becoming caps of about 65 uF and only a few volts. All the caps are unusual in that they appear to be *hermetically sealed* in hard plastic cases with epoxy filling around the leads. I have seen the same caps fail the same way in old 405s before. Any info on these caps ( maker ?) or comments ? ........ Phil |

Yeah, didn't that screwdriver short something out in the power supply of one of the Quad ESL63s then something went poof and a small puff of smoke drifted slowly towards the ceiling? The poor ESL, didn't sound the same since. :-( Some good advice - take it to a professional that knows what he is doing. Yes, agreed. I wonder if that lovely lesbian couple with the two kids and the tarted up disco speakers that are planning to buy Flat 6 will ever need their toaster fixed? http://www.ljhooker.com.au/property_...pe=residential What about your pals TW or PT? Hey, steady on. You might end up opening old wounds here. AFAIK neither TW or PT would consider themselves "pals" of PA. Besides, PA doesn't have any pals - well none he's prepared to name. :P TT Cheers, Alan |

I think it is only fair that he be now given the same consideration that everyone expects for themselves when communicating on usernet. I think baiting should stop. |

His hide must be thicker than his skull ;-) I would offer to help if I had ever seen the inside of a 405. I enjoy Phil's antipodean charm, even when pointed in my direction. I guess Trevor Wilson would advise that the LM301 is nothing but a distortion generator and should be replaced by a 5532, and to increase the psu caps to 0.5F. Jute would recommend reducing the capacitance to stop the sound becoming sluggish. I don't believe that anything wonderful happens when Z1Z3=Z2Z4 because at audio frequencies you are multiplying zero by infinity to get any number you want. Plenty of advice, circuit diagrams and capacitor kits at http://www.quad405.com -- Eiron No good deed ever goes unpunished. |

"Eiron" I would offer to help if I had ever seen the inside of a 405. ** Dear friend - a treat awaits you. I enjoy Phil's antipodean charm, even when pointed in my direction. ** Must be some kind of weird pommy masochist. I guess Trevor Wilson would advise that the LM301 is nothing but a distortion generator and should be replaced by a 5532, and to increase the psu caps to 0.5F. Jute would recommend reducing the capacitance to stop the sound becoming sluggish. ** The justifiably famous Quad 405 needs no snake-oil mods whatever. Early examples simply need their small electros replacing - as it seems Quad were royally dudded by the Dumbkoph Krauts at Roederstein who supplied allegedly "sealed, long life caps" that were anything but !! I don't believe that anything wonderful happens when Z1Z3=Z2Z4 because at audio frequencies you are multiplying zero by infinity to get any number you want. ** Completely off with the fairies stuff. Plenty of advice, circuit diagrams and capacitor kits at http://www.quad405.com ** All of it snake oil inspired ********. ......... Phil |

I figure Phil as being one of the most knowledgable electronics people on the groups and I do have respect for his electronics knowledge. I have seen language from him in the past that I think made you blush, but what the heck. His posts of late have been demonstrating a willingness to try to be helpful to those he can help and I give him respect for that. |
