No bottom octave...
For some odd reason, the minute you mention 'horns' ('backhorn-loaded fullrange, single driver speakers) to anyone they take great delight in telling you they don't have anything at the frequency extremes. (Like 95% of all other speakers that are commonly available *do*....??) Well, I beg to differ... After another recording sesh* last night, while the mics were still mounted and wired up, I carried them through and recorded this extract from a 'pristine-looking, but very noisy' (as all vinylists know only too well) Debussy Preludes LP: http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show...iano%20Bit.mp3 This does not approach the upper limits of these speakers, but does demonstrate (I think) their ability to produce clean, low notes without the continuous, tuneless boom that a lot of people seem to consider constitutes a 'proper bass'...? Or, to put it another way, how 'warm and woolly' is that..?? (Factor also in that this was recorded from a cheap, Chinese 300B SET with a valve phono stage and we've got no chance, have we? :-) * Here's an update, if anybody is at all interested - the end of the Mozart Clart Concerto (1st Mov't) played over an LP in the background: http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show...vt%20(end).mp3 (Still not good, but I think Swim's starting to get into it nicely..!!?? :-) |
