Denon micro system speaker upgrade
I'm quite disappointed with my Denon DM33 microsystems standard speakers.
Lovely and crisp, but NO bass at all. Well not much. My question is: Is it worth while upgrading the speakers? Richer sounds have some Kef floorstanders for only £89 and Mordaunt Shorts for £150 (Can't remember models, but can find out if it's useful). Don't want too much bass, just a more balanced sound. Would a subwoofer with standard speakers be better? Don't want to upset neighbors though and don't want loads of bass at expense of clarity. Is the Denons performance the weakest link? IE will better spekers not improve things much? Is the Denon 22W up to it? Sorry - too many questions! ANy opinions or advice will be greatly appreciated. Cheers! |

Cheers! Is that the Denon with speakers made by Mission? They should be good enough. Where are they placed? Putting them near a wall will improve the subjective bass. Otherwise you can get floor-standers if your room is not too large given the power available but they need space - typically up to 1m from the nearest wall in any direction. You will certainly get better sound from them than your existing. Also look at/listen to some of the Gale floorstanders: they are a bit smaller than the KEF but sound quite good. It has to be said that for most purposes floor standing speakers sound better than bookshelves if you want bass, but people often say that their imaging is not so good - with which I would have to agree as the owner/user of both KEF Q55 and Spendor BC1. Ultimately it depends upon your taste, the type of music you play, and how loud you want it. Decide on those, then take some discs that you know, go to Richers on a quiet day and with any luck they'll demonstrate them - or you will be able to take them home to try them. -- Woody harrogate3 at ntlworld dot com |

If they are the Missions, they will take nicely to a small added sub. I tried a little Canton sub with the M3 my wife has and it made a significant improvement in balance, especially at low levels. Kal Hi Kal, I've wondered about adding a subwoofer, but worried (out of ignorance! Not used subwoofers before) about too much woolly bass upsetting neighbors! I had a quick look around and it seems £100 is about where prices start - what sort of price would need to be spent? Actually - I'll google your Canton right now... Cheers! |

Yeah, I've heard it was Mission that designed them. The longer version of my story is: Had an old system comprising Yamaha amp, Cambridge Audio CD player and Tannoy Mercury MX1 speakers. It was a modest system, but I was quite happy with the sound. Then, the CD player played up to the point where I couldn't stand it any more and my little boy pierced the centre bit (dust cap?) of the Tannoys with his jet fighter. A new system was in order. I thought that to save space I'd try a compact microsystem. Played a few in a couple of shops and was very dishearthened until I tried the Denon. Compared to the others it seemed a world apart! Cash was splashed out immediately! After getting it home (~6mnths ago now) I was a little disappointed. Maybe my expectations were too high. I connected up my damaged Tannoys and it sounded much more rounded but a bit sort of wooly and loose. Sorry - don't know how to describe it. But I'm putting it down to the damage. So, I'm hoping that if I get some bargain spekers, I will be content again! But I'm a bit worried that I should have just gone the separates route instead... Can't afford to change the whole lot now anyway! So - thats where I am! Today, I phoned Tannoy to see about getting replacement cones. They were extremely helpful, but the cones were a shocking 44.87 + VAT each, plus £5 delivery! That would total what I paid for the speakers new! So, now I'm looking at: 1) Follow the wifes advice. Sut the **** up and be happy with what I've got! 2) Get some KEF/Gale/MS floorstanders post crimbo 3) Get MX1s repaired 4) get subwoofer 5) ebay 1) Don't think I can manage this 2) Most likely as far as I can see at the moment 3) I would if it were half the price 4) Worried about quality. No reason - subwoofers are new to me. Also worried about upsetting the neighbors! 5) Finding something decent/right and local(to avoid massive postal costs) seems tricky I play mainly 'rock' music - Cake, genesis, soundgarden, stevie wonder, flaming lips, etc etc. Usually at modest volumes - neighbors and three small children! SO don't want silly amounts of bass, but really want a clean, punchy sound. Thanks for te advice - any other thoughts would be welcome! Cheers! |

Well, I suppose it would depend on the speakers, but I would definitely try them. My wife had a Denon system with Denon/Mission speakers when I met her. I thought it sounded quite good, but wondered what it would sound like with different speakers. So I tried it with the Rogers LS4as that I used to use as my main speakers and now use as rear speakers in an AV setup. I thought it sounded worse with the Rogers - the midband seemed to disappear, which made me wonder whether the supplied speakers are somehow tailored to the frequency response of the unit. Andrew |

The Rogers are pretty good speakers, though without any extreme bass. There's some detail of the mark 2 he http://www.mhennessy1.f9.co.uk/rogers/brochures.htm It's possible that the Denon system has a frequency response tailored to the supplied speakers. Maybe it has a loudness control (boosted bass and treble at low volumes) that gives the effect of quiet midrange on good speakers. Does it have some preset equalizer settings? You need to do some measurements. -- Eiron. |

You need to do some measurements. The answer to those questions is, generally, yes. I found that replacing the speakers on my wife's Denon system was not as satisfactory as adding a little sub. Certainly, the EQ settings are tailored to the little Missions. Kal |
