Larrge or Small ?
Hi,
I have a question regarding setting "Large" or "Small" for speakers within a surround setup. My setup : Front/Center : Quadral Ascent 450 (115W RMS, 35-24000Hz, 4-8Ohm) Surround : Quadral Phase Zero (40W RMS, 65-22000Hz, 4Ohm) Sub : Elac Base 373 (crossover freq 40-180Hz) What would be the best settings for front, center and surround speakers ? And which crossover freq should I use for the sub ? Many thanks in advance for helping me out, David. |

Certainly set them for 'small' and try using 80Hz all around on the Quadrals and push the Elac to 180Hz. After using that for a bit, you might want to experiment with settings of 50 or 60Hz for the L/C/Rs but keep the surrounds at 80Hz. Kal |

Your amp should probably default to 80Hz but there's no certainty of that. Kal |

So I can assume the crossover freq of the amp is 100Hz ? So then it would be best to set the crossover freq of the sub at 100Hz, correct ? Thanks again, David. |

Set the sub's crossover to off or its highest available frequency. -- Eiron. |

Hmm now I'm completely lost ;) I have now set front and center to large, and surround to small setting. With LFE setting to L/R + LFE, and crossover on sub at 80Hz. This way, from the HK manual, the front- and centerspeakers will get the complete signal, plus the LFE all below 80Hz. The surrounds aren't complete speakers so I set them to small setting. However, on several internet websites there's talk about this way the front and center not getting the mids and highs they should be getting. It basically says, set all speakers to small setting. But I'm afraid that way the front and center, which are a very nice set of full-range speakers, won't operate to their fullest capacity. Does this sound credible to you ? Cheers, David. |

Bottom line: You can try it both ways. My advice: Do not use L/R+LFE since your L/R speakers are not capable of handling LFE. Whether it is 80 or 100Hz (80 better), set them all to small and turn the sub's setting up to max (180Hz). Do this because the receiver is controlling the sub's crossover frequency. Kal |

Thanks both Kal and Eiron. My system now seems to be set up just right. For
both music (stereo/DTS) and movies (DD/DTS), the low freq's blend in very well. All the best for the new year ! David. |
