Active or passive loudspeakers?

I have a Roland VS-1680 hdd recorder for home recording, and wonder if
I should buy a pair of new loudspeakers to use with this recorder. I
know there are small active and passive speakers, but think that if I
buy 2 passive and connect them to my amp, I also can play cd's through
these speakers, and I suppose I don't can do that with active speakers?
Anyone that knows a little about this?

I have used active 'speakers for hi-fi for over 20 years, and still do.

My main system uses Meridian DSP 'speakers and my secondary system
Genelec 1029A 'speakers.

The Genelecs I use on my computer for home recording and playback. If
you take the output of your sound card to the inputs of the active
'speakers you can play CDs through the computer.

To me, the advantages of active 'speakers in having a more accurate
crossover, size for size getting better bass performance and not having
an external power amp are well worth it.

You can connect active speakers to your CD player, just as you can
connect them to your VS-1680. But I expect you'd miss the convenient
input selection and volume control of a hi-fi amp (which is what I
assume you're using?).

I've only glanced at a web-site picture of the VS-1680. But it
appears to have plenty of input channels. Could you connect your CD
player to Line In of a pair of inputs and use it as a control preamp
while it wasn't being a recorder?
