Hi everyone,

Been meaning to do this for a while but never got round to it and not
sure where to start.

I've had a Sony STR-DE 475 for a while now with the bundled Sony
speakers and have enjoyed it for movies.

However i've started to feed music in to it now, and i'm not impressed
with the sound i'm getting.

I guess its because of
a) the quality of speakers
b) the fact its a 5.1 speaker set up. So only two channels left/right
channel and sub are on.

What are the best choices to have the best of both worlds for music
and movies on this system?

Do I need to replace all the speakers with a better 5.1 speaker setup?

Replace the speakers with five good speakers that do not require a
sub?

Or replace the whole setup?

Obviously i'm on a budget, and was only looking to spend around 200 -
350.

Any recommendations on setups and links would be appreciated.

TIA,

Matt

Christmas is over, dealers are starting to sweat - beat someone up for deal
on a nice set of matching speakers for starters. Almost any of the 'makes'
(Tannoy, KEF, B&W, Wharfedale &c.) will knock the crap out of a cheap
'cinema bundle'. Don't bother with a centre speaker (my own view) but get a
sub for movies (you won't/don't need it for music, IMO) and then look at
your amp hard - I suspect it's fine but that you'll not rest until you've
dropped some dough on a shiny new one!

(Probably as much a 'lifestyle' decision as an 'audio' one! ;-)

Are most of the subs sold these days power sensing? I say this because
I still have to physically switch my sub on which really gets on my
nerves :-)

Thats what happens when you spend 150 quid on a remote to do
everything but I still have to get off my backside to switch the sub
on :-)

Get an 'intelligent' 4-way mains block.
Plug the AV amp into the master socket and the sub into a slave.

Can you set the sockets to individually react to the master? As i'd
only want the sub to react, nothing else. Amp only comes on for DVD
Movies, Music and Xbox. Stays off for TV!

I suppose it depends on just what you watch on TV, but it sounds like
you're missing out what can be on one of the finest sound sources
available.
