(Big TVs and silly, expensive *audiophile* computer soundcards are a

I used to agree about big TVs until I got one Of course, 34" might
not be considered "big" any more. Given a certain viewing distance
there is indeed a size at which the picture runs out of useful
definition. I find many cinemas today cross this limit.

I watch the news on a 14 inch screen and movies on a hundred inch screen
and not much else....

Actually not true - I also have a stack of (TV) recorded stuff that could go
either way, depending on the subject matter....

What do you consider a silly audiophile soundcard?

Anything over about 16 quid - if you *really* can't put up with the onboard
sound (you missed out the word 'expensive')....

But I like my £16 soundcard, it lets me see whats going on in 300b
driver stages below -90db.

Sugden A21a is a Class A amplifier with 12 watts into 8 ohms output. I
think, but may be wrong, that the basic circuit is similar to the
Linsley-Hood Class A amplifier.

I don't have a circuit diagram or service manual for the 'A21a', so maybe
you are correct. However by the time of the JES A21 'Mk3' the output
circuit had changed to being 'symmetric' with NPN/PNP pairs for the
push-pull arrangement. Hence very different to the original A21 and the old
JLH designs. Much more 'modern' design than the original, exploting the
eventual availablity of decent NPN/PNP pairs.

None of the A21 Mk1 to Mk3 (nor the Richard Allan version) have exactly the
same topology as JLH's 1969 WW class A amp - although one of the early
versions of the Mk1 is quite close in various ways! [1]

ahem BTW Keep an eye on HFN magazine for an article on Sugden and class
A amps... :-)

Slainte,

[1] Not that you could tell any of this by looking at the old copies
of WW in our Uni library as some expletive deleted had torn out
the JLH articles *before* the issues were bound back in the 1960's!
