MOSFET power amp..???
After the recent talk here about MOSFET amps I have been watching this one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...3273&rd=1&rd=1 Anybody got a opinion - I can't see any speaker terminals in the pix, is it summat weird for studio use only? (I would need to be able to use it as an ordinary 'power' amp...??) Also, any problem with unbalanced/XLR connectors - I already have them on my mic pres...?? TIA.... |

Could be via jack sockets, not very good but its done in some semi-pro gear like Bose etc. Cheers, Mike |

You can read about them here. http://sovereignwebpage.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/page2.html The base model seems to have come with jacks for input and output - XLRs and balanced inputs were offered as an option. As it's in a 2U rackmount case, I imagine the cooling fans will be quite powerful and therefore quite noisy. Are you looking at these for domestic hi-fi use? |

Could well use XLRs for the outputs. Only weird studio amps you might come across have a 100 volt line output - but will be marked as such. Although not used for monitoring speakers but driving headphone rings, etc. Also, any problem with unbalanced/XLR connectors - I already have them on my mic pres...?? Only snag may be is that pro amps usually need more driving than domestic gear due to different line levels. -- *I wished the buck stopped here, as I could use a few* Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound. |

(I would need to be able to use it as an ordinary 'power' amp...??) **I don't know the amp, but it depends on the intended use. As a power amp, it wil clearly beat any of your favoured Chinese SET amps. Easy. MOSFETs, OTOH, are not, IMO, the best choice for really high quality audio. MOSFETs exhibit significantly higher distortion than BJTs, at low to medium bias levels. At high bias levels, they exhibit only marginally worse distortion. Additionally and more controversially, MOSFETs 'strangle' the sound, via a kind of compression mechanism, associated with the negative tempco of gm inherent to MOSFETs. Also, any problem with unbalanced/XLR connectors - I already have them on my mic pres...?? **Nope. Just earth the negative. -- Trevor Wilson www.rageaudio.com.au -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com |

When people make these sort of comments about stuff they haven't personally heard I am minded of two schoolkids arguing which is best - Ferrari or Maserati....??? My Chinese SET beat an expensive UK kit (again) only *last night* - much better bass, if nothing else.... MOSFETs, OTOH, are not, IMO, the best choice for really high quality audio. This does not seem to gel with what I am reading in the copious paperwork that came with the Technics pre/power I've just got, but I haven't read it all yet....?? (I'm under the impression atm that MOSFETS are being used in it particularly for their 'linearity' and freedom from distortion..??) Also, any problem with unbalanced/XLR connectors - I already have them on my mic pres...?? **Nope. Just earth the negative. OK - thanks, but I've decided to ignore that particular bit of kit now... |
