Reflectograph reel-to-reel recorder
Hi there
There doesn't seem to be much information on the net about my father's
Reflectograph reel-to-reel recorder which he bought in the mid 50s. It was
varispeed, between aprox 2 and 7 inches per second. It still more or less
works. Does anyone know if it would have any value, or of anybody who might
be interested in taking it off our hands?
Thanks
Greg Chapman

Sadly, reel to reel machines, even well known ones like Revox and
Ferrograph only sell for very small amounts on Ebay. Part of the reason
is the high cost of postage on something so heavy, partly on the fact
that RR tapes are difficult and expensive to get hold of, and not least
on the fact that almost any computer sound card can do a technically
better job of recording these days.
Reflectograph was never one of the top brands, so I don't think you will
get anything for the unit. A local collector might be interested in
taking it, you can try Freecycle.
Good luck
S.

It's the sort of thing that will have some value to a collector of such
things - if you can find one. And the better the cosmetic condition the
higher the value - many such things got hard use. Ebay is the obvious
place to advertise it.

Good A77s tend to sell for more than mine cost new. ;-)

Perhaps, you must have got a very good deal, (or you didn't pay Purchase
Tax as a professional user) but the A77 in 1969/70 was £ 187 19s for the
basic chassis mounted no monitor amplifiers unit up to £ 222 13s for the
fully-loaded one, including tax. Having a look at Ebay's past auctions,
an A77 for parts went for £ 45, three working ones went for £ 63, £122
and £175. B77 and PR99s have gone for £ 56-155 with one exception of a
HS B77 which went for a surprising £ 410.
As I said, they don't sell for large amounts. Ferrographs and Brenells
typically get around £ 50.

Sold an A77 in reasonable working condition with original box and manual
for about £220 on ebay, about 4 years ago.
I did a few vinyl recordings and the results were sublime - rock steady,
no discernible hiss, with the whole vinyl 'ambience' thing. Just too
much of a faff in the end, even though decent tapes were readily
available from a shop next to Aldgate tube station.
I've got a scan of the manual if anyone wants it.

Well its better to see these fine old machines in use and still around.
I rescued a Studer B67 from a skip over at KLFM they didn't know what
they were throwing away!.
Course it rarely gets used .. but all the same looks impressive;--))
