I have just been informed that Ken Kessler has been saying some very
nice things about my Dynaco Mk III monoblocs somewhere in the trade
press recently. Does anyone have the article and, if they do, would it
be possible to get a scan or a digital photo of it?
Long shot, I know, but it would be interesting to see it - maybe he's
not quite the wattock I've got him down for? :-)
(The amps are cracking good - I've known that for ages!)
Anyway, TIA...
You're probably thinking of the July issue of HiFi News. There's a
"Classic Kit" feature that mentions the Dynaco amps.
I'll email you a scan.
OK, Serge - thanks, I'd like to see it!
How's that GL75 - sounding any good?
Yes, it's rather good fun! I decided to strip down the motor anyway, just
for the fun of doing it, relubed it and reassembled it. I *think* it's
quieter now, but not too sure. Rumble was well down
As to sound, and compared with my two other turntables, it's doing rather
well. Given that all three have different cartridges, arms and RIAA
amplifiers, I would be surprised if they didn't all sound very different,
but frankly, they don't differ that much. I have level-matched the three,
and can play a record on any of them and be happy with the performance. I
was recently given through Freecycle a large number of LPs, a mixture of
mono and stereo, going back to the late '50s, through to the late 70s,
which I'm cleaning and playing through to see if they are worth keeping. Now
I can play them using the GL75 and not put wear on my expensive cartridges.
I was earlier playing some Berlioz (Harold in Italy) and it was excellent,
proper dynamic range, of the sort now rare with CDs. It really is ironic
that for me, one of CDs greatest devotees, is deriving pleasure again from
LPs recorded and/or cut in the late 50s, 60s and early '70s.
For anyone interested, the GL75 cartridge is a Goldring 1042, RIAA input is
the Meridian 201 pre-amp.
I have recently been playing with a Thorens TD160, and I can't say I was
happy with it. I've had over the years several suspended subchassis and
several solid turntables, and the solids always sounded better to me,
somehow sounding "fuller", but maybe that's just more colouration, from
having less isolation.
