So I have to have some kind of simple mixer unit ? Would it be a
commonly used item that I could buy in a street electronics store ?

For such a simple job a passive mixer would do, but this relies on being
able to get at the inputs of the power amplifier of the CD system feeding
the speakers.

able to get at the inputs of the power amplifier of the CD system feeding

Yes. I wonder if there is such a thing as a post-amplifier mixer...

You could use the outputs of the power amplifiers into a passive mixer
with suitable attenuators and then feed into an external amp. I suppose it
is possible to make a mixer running at LS level using transformers, but
I'd guess an expensive option.

reasonable cost" and spare your co-workers the horrible inevitability
of the announcement :-)

You could even turn of the Muzak off completely. Though that's
probably against the law now ;-(
