using a playstation 1 as a high end cd player!
Apologies if this has been discussed before, I'd be interested to read
peoples' thoughts on this idea. Considering you can find PS1 s for peanuts at boot fairs etc, who knows we could be missing out on saving ourselves thousands on a high end cd player ;-). Sounds generally ridiculous audiophoolery to me: http://dogbreath.de/PS1/index.html -B |

ps.com... Apologies if this has been discussed before, I'd be interested to read peoples' thoughts on this idea. Considering you can find PS1 s for peanuts at boot fairs etc, who knows we could be missing out on saving ourselves thousands on a high end cd player ;-). Sounds generally ridiculous audiophoolery to me: http://dogbreath.de/PS1/index.html -B Apart from operational considerations like track access times, lack of IR remote control and the like, the only concern I have is that the DAC used in the PS1 is an AKM 4309, which is aimed at the AV market rather than the hi-fi market. The performance on distortion and noise is somewhat lower than current DACs are capable of. Having said that, I am firmly of the opinion that provided the performance is already below the generally-acknowledged thresholds for audibility (at least amongst audio professionals) then improving on that will not benefit the perceived sound quality. The AKM DAC is comfortably better than that, so should result in an audio performance that is indistinguishable from "better" CD players. I can't make any comments about the error correction and jitter performance of the PS1, but I would expect the former to be perfectly adequate. S. -- http://audiopages.googlepages.com |
