mixing two CD sources question

Hi all from a newbie to this group.

I have a CD player playing background music into a set of speakers
around my office.

I want to play a CD that is made up basically of silence mixed with
an announcement that comes up every ten minutes - though the same
speakers at the same time as the music.

Can I just get a small walkman and connect it to the speakers in
parallel ?

NO - you need to feed the output of both units (The CD Players) into a
device called a mixer. These are avalible quite cheaply for what you
want to do from Maplins. You don't need to spend any more than £40 I
would guess.I am assuming here that both CD players are stand alone
units and not part of a music centre (Blimey - that's an old gadget
now !!) or mini hifi system. The output from the mixer is then fed into
your amp.
So you have :
CD player + CD player into Mixer into Amp into Speakers.

You will have to listen to judge the volumes on the mixer between the
2 cd players,as you will want the announcements to be louder than the
music. You may also have continuous play on one of the cd players so
you won't have to keep restarting the announcement cd.Let me know how
you get on.]

mixing two CD sources question

On the minidisc, the output is probably a minijack. That will do.You
will need a minijack to phono lead to plug it into the mixer (assuming
the mixers inputs are all phono). You will probably have to have the
channel used for the minidisc a bit lower than the one from the CD
player as you'll probably be plugging into the headphone out socket
from the minidisc which chucks out a bit more sound than phono outputs
(LINE OUT), but that is ok.You may not need a stand alone amp.If the
music system you are using has a LINE IN you can use that so :

CD player and minidisc into 2 seperate LINE IN channels on mixer.
Mixer OUT into amp OR LINE IN input on an existing music system.
music system to speakers.
When setting up,have all the volumes turned down quite low in case
anything blares out, reduxing the risk of blowing your speakers.
Had a quick look at mixers and found these which should do for you.

(This one would be good if you ever wanted to add any other inputs
like a video recorder or dvd player (sound only of course)

Ouch... I need a standalone Amp ?

I apologise for the confusing story Chris.

There is already a CD setup in the office with a built in amp.

In this case could I change the walkman to a stand alone CD player
such as a portable Cd player (one of those kids use with built in
speakers)... and a mixer after the CD players output ?
