Is there a value in QUAD II amplifiers?

But they certainly made up for it with the Quad 50 - TV theatre in Shepherds Bush, now The Empire, had over a dozen of them in the early '70s. The BBC also had their own valve amp, the LSM/8 which was a derivative of the Leak TL12. These were plentiful second hand at one time. If they had used Quad valve amps in quantity they'd have given it their own designation too - the BBC always did. Can't remember the identification they gave the Quad 50 in its various designations. The BBC Leak amp still wore its Leak badge, though. -- *If we weren't meant to eat animals, why are they made of meat? Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound. |

But if it were a standard amp (the prof model with input transformers) would they have done so then? I recall seeing quite a number of Radfords at BH, also with bal line transformers. These had the Radford badge (of course they might have been known as something else) Can't remember the identification they gave the Quad 50 in its various designations. The BBC Leak amp still wore its Leak badge, though. That is certainly so for the TL12, but the LSMs that I have seen had no badge expect for the BBC engineering workshops plate front left. I know several ex-BBC people who read this group. Hopefully one of them will make contact by e-mail, and put us in the picture. Iain |

I have also seen them in grey without the attenuator on the left hand side of the front panel. Iain |

Thanks Don. Interesting link. Note both the Bulgin mains socket and also the XLR (Cannon) speaker connector, which was also at one stage used as a power connector. Neither are approved these days. The Leak amps I remember from my BBC TV days were all Leak gold. BBC amps were all BBC grey - or whatever the contemporary colour was. But those Leak amps certainly had balanced inputs - I assumed as supplied by Leak to special order. Of course later on they used Quad 405s for the LS5/8 which were specials with crossovers built in - so it might make sense to remove badges to avoid any confusion. -- *Re-elect nobody Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound. |
