I had an old Rogers valve amp which I was going to 'dispose' of,
however my daughter put it on ebay where it fetched £130, purchased
by a very nice gentleman in Japan, however it cost over £90.00 just
to send it to him!

Interesting - I need to dispose of some pretty specialised bits of kit -
monoblok valve amps, electrostatic speakers etc - and thought I would
have to look around for specialist sites or magazines. Is eBay in fact
the best way to go? I must be the only bloke who's never used it....

Hi Geoff. ;-)

Excellent way of selling near anything. One tip is to find out the cost
of packing/carriage beforehand and include that as a firm cost on your
listing. And also mention they may be collected in person.
Stupidly high carriage costs - or not stated ones - put many off bidding.

Here ya go - ignore all the pinky/purple (that doesn't happen - it's
just the camera and the crap pix) and for some reason everything is
shifted to the left a bit which wasn't happening yesterday but it's only
a 14" portable and I haven't a clue, so I wouldn't shoot the PVR.
Anyway, I'm sure this will all mean more to you than it does to me!

There's probably a load more, but I'm sure there's enough to give you an
idea...

Thank you for that info / screen shots Keith, as a result I have given it
a go and placed an order tonight. You should be on commission :-)

OK Gio, I hope you like it; if you post any observations on the groups,
please ensure to include ukra - I would be very interested to hear your
opinion. From viewing earlier this evening, I can confirm that DVDs played
through it ('AV in') suffer *no* loss of quality at all, from what I can
see! (Tested with Kill Bill Vol. 1 - the Okinawa sequence!)

One thing - hook it up and scan the stations in *before* you put an HDD in
it, or the machine will play dead!

Thanks for the tip Keith. With luck it will be delivered on Wed so no
report for a bit. It seems a little strange that the machine plays dead when
a drive is fitted. I would have thought the machine would have set about
formatting the new drive on boot-up then would have been ready for tuning.
By the way what is ukra ? The only thing I know with those letters are The
United Kingdom Rocket Association (UKRA) as in www.ukra.org.uk/
If it means something else then you will have to let me know because my isp
does not list ukra on the newsgroup list.

Well Keith,

I must be a 'secondary user' ( fathers, people with learning
difficulties) tell your #1 son. I been and bought one this afternoon.

Kills me the way he doesn't actually say 'it'll be plenty good enough
for you' but I can usually tell he's thinking it!! :-)

Brought it home, set it up first (as you recommended)

Yes, the manual's a little vague on that - like it doesn't mention it at
all!!

then added hdd
and formated it, and I have to say I'm impressed! It'll do for my
needs I only need to view one channel and record from another.

Me also...

Thanks again for all your info.

You're welcome and I hope it continues to do the trick - the only raised
eyebrow I've had is having hit the OTR button to finish a programme this
afternoon (default 2 hours), when I got in a little earlier this evening
the little bugger was beavering away some 5 and a half hours in and
still going like a good 'un! Not the end of the world, but I hope it
doesn't do it too often!!?? Anyway, I shall shortly hook the S-Video
output up to my digital PJ and check that out - if it's OK, it's going
to save the cost of a telly bigger than my 14" portable! (Bedroom
setup!)

I agree, but dead it was! I thought it might have been a knackered
on/off switch but I could hear/feel the HDD whirring when I put my ear
to it, so I took the HDD out and tried again and it lit up straight
away - I didn't even see the channels go in, it seems they were there by
the time I had got the telly on and toggled round to it!

Yep, but you know what these gadgets are like - they all got their funny
little ways!!

By the way what is ukra ?

I see you got your answer!! ;-)

(I don't subscribe anywhere else - if you didn't include ukra I wouldn't
see your comments!)

Yes, good way to sell that gear. Couple of tips -

Sell smaller items first to get some feedback. People will be more
inclined to bid on the more expensive stuff once you have feedback.

Search 'completed items' for the things you are selling before you put
them up. It will help you establish what your item is worth, what
starting price to use.

Provide shipping costs up front. Don't forget insurance!

Decribe accurately, including faults and cosmetic damage.

It's not a good idea to cut and paste text from other auctions.

Use clear, detailed photographs. More is better.

If you allow people to collect, "cash on collection" is best. Do NOT
let them pay up front for anything of signficiant value with Paypal.

Why not?

Becuase they can claim not to have received the goods and get a
chargeback .. it happens

Ah! I hadn't thought of that one. Too trusting.

I thought most of the reputable parcel companies offer on-line tracking,
right up to the recipient's signature - wouldn't that be proof of delivery?
