Default REQ:Amp recommendation please

Hi guys/gals

Here's a tricky one for you.

I'm looking for a BUDGET audio amp that can be used to power an old pair of
Mission 732s for a special purpose.

Combination would be used to run an Ipod, via mini stereo jack and RCA
cable, as my wife teaches Tap Dance and
the current PC speaker set up (Creative with sub) is not man enough.

Got a budget of about 50 - 60 quid but maybe a little more. It needs to be
robust enough to be carried around, and fairly light. Power should be at
least 100W

I welcome your suggestions and comments.

What is the special purpose? It seems to me that you want to play
music through it, which would be an entirely normal purpose.

Forget 100W, it is not necessary I promise. You need lightness and
portability, which means small. So have a look at Ebay and find
yourself a Cyrus two. There are several at your budget right now.

When you get it you may want to take the lid off and squirt some
switch cleaner into the input selector switches, but otherwise they
are bombproof.

Mini stereo jack is the worst way of connecting an iPod to audio
equipment. Not enough device volume, so noise and limiting distortion
come into the picture.

Find a cheap docking station and use RCA connectors from that. You might
find the superior level matching makes all the different with the
current setup.

Thanks for your reply,

Yeah I take your point about the 'special purpose' but I meant to portray
the fact that it
would be carried around instead of being sat on a shelf.

I have found on Ebay the amp you referred to - thx

Pretty well any amp will do the job - the more powerful the better. If
you use an underpowered amp and drive it too hard you could well fry the
tweeters, whereas if the amp has more power than required you may hear
it 'crack' when driven too hard but your speakers will stay in one
peace.

I would suggest you are not really interested in quality if tap-dancing
is going on at the same time, so look at any amp by Rotel, Denon,
Marantz, Cambridge, as I said pretty well anything. Even look in you
local Richer's for something on the Managers Specials shelf.

Good advice.

I took a peek at Richer Sounds and spotted an Eltex AMP70 (very BUDGET!).
http://www.richersounds.com/showprod...pid=ELTA-AMP70
http://www.ciao.co.uk/Reviews/Eltax_...MP_70__6499036

Seems to be OK especially for £50. Includes IR remote and a socket for
microphone which could be useful
given the circumstances it will be used for.

Will keep looking though. Denon, Marantz etc all seem a little too pricey
for my needs although
most certainly better quality.

Thanks again
