is what does not work in my case and if that does not work...

That would be my advice. I'll pay big money for a musical instrument,
a microphone, a loudspeaker, because I can hear the difference. The
only difference I've ever heard between modern CD players was when one
overloaded the input of a domestic amplifier.

You've had good advice. Some of us think any competent unit will do.
One person thinks you'll benefit from paying a moderate amount more.
No-one has encouraged you to pay silly money for an audiophile unit,
or suggested mortgaging your house to buy magic cables. What did you
want to hear?

This was what I (and my wallet) hoped to hear. I was just disparing
over how soon the SNR degraded even here.

**Send me the schematic of your 30 Squid Sony and I'll tell you. The HK has
a number of significant technical details which, IMO, make it sound better
than all the cheap players (and most of the expensive ones) I've ever heard.
