DAB Radio recorders
 

Hi!

I wondered if anyone can advise?

I would like to record Radio 3 broadcasts that I can't listen to at
the time onto SD card(s) and then load them up onto my PC and play the
programme at a more convenient time.

Would something like the Pure PocketDAB 2000 Digital Radio be a
practical choice to do this?

Any advice or suggestions gratefully received.

Go to Expensive World and buy one of their USB Freeview receivers (from
12.97 to 29.99,) then run it on your PC and save direct to hard disc.
Most units come with time-settable recording software.

Or get an aanlogue TV / FM radio tuner card.

You won't like DAB quality, believe me.

Yes, I have often wondered whether this would be a good solution. I
have been put off by the worries in the reviews about compatability
with Windows XP SP2 and the quality of reception from the supplied
aerial. Still, if it records in MP3 - so that I can burn a CD if I
need to this might be worth a look. Of course, like many of us I am
running out of USB ports.

You won't like DAB quality, believe me.

Interesting this. Maybe I'm getting old but I find DAB Ok for Radio 3,
provided that the BBC don't fiddle with the bit rate again!

For R3?

DAB in many cases will provide far better sound quality than FM on R3.

Yes - assuming the DAB signal is good at the time and place you want to
do the recording.

I'm assuming you also want the pocket radio - rather than just a way of
recording DAB?

If all you want to do is record radio for future use, I have a FreeView TV
PCI card in my PC that allows timed recordings. So very easy to use for
radio too. Of course you need to be able to receive FreeView. ;-)

It is ok. Most who go on about 'DAB quality' base it on listening to a
portable or whatever. Or simple prejudice.

Well, I just love gadgets!

If all you want to do is record radio for future use, I have a FreeView TV
PCI card in my PC that allows timed recordings. So very easy to use for

That sounds like a good idea. What do you do for an aerial? I live in
a block of flats and so my options are limited. However, a PCI card
and an internal aerial might work OK - we are in a good signal area
here.

Ask some neighbours. As Freeview TV and radio is there for the taking
and tuner boxes are cheap, SOME of them must be using it?

Hi David, not surprised you're wanting to record R3 - the chances of tuning
it in and actually getting to hear some *music* seem to be getting ever
thinner, these days! Anyway, I don't know if it would suit but the 'One
Touch' recording facility from some/many PVRs (from the EPG) makes it very
easy to grab stuff for listening later, but possibly not so good if you want
to keep the recordings. (Swim is listening to GQT on the 'Tommy' as I
type....)

DAB only sounds good on Radio 3 it seems...

Some people who mostly listen to Radio 3 are prejudiced against
listening to other types of music, so don't appreciate how badly how UK
DAB mangles up the content of other music stations out there, and these
people are those in the higher classes of society with a chequebook to
put this right.... but they won't.

UK DAB is the laughing stock of the world.
