As I switched off my 2A3 SET which had been sounding better than ever (due
to a valve swap in my phono stage) just now I could hear a feint muttering
in a foreign language! The warm *nostalgic* feeling and familiarity (Radio
Luxembourg?) was most pleasant, but it was dick-all to to with my valves -
it was coming from the little Pioneer SS amp which was/is hooked up to a
pair of B&W speakers with no sources on, but left on and switched to the
Phono input!

The language was impossible to nail - Eastern European yet almost
Italian-sounding?? Is Radio Albania still about and still pushing it out
large?

Could if have been Czech or Hungarian?
There are many good E.European stations, especially if you
are interested in classical music. The Czech station Radio Prague,
and also transmissions from Radio Budapest, Hungary , Kiev in the
Ukraine are well worth listening to.

They beat "East Enders" any day:-)

I think it is quite funny that they are now talking about adding
vision to digital radio channels like it is something new. Almost as
if we had never heard of television. A bit like offering "listen
again" for a limited period, quite ignoring the fact that we have had
recorders for the last fifty years.

That was scary as hell! I remember it well. Listened to it recently on
BBC7 and it wasn't nearly as good as I remembered though. Operation
Luna was definitely the best of the series.

Operation
Luna was definitely the best of the series.

ISTR one episode was acted in 'complete darkness' and I remember that one to
be particularly scary!! By way of a contrast, we watched 'Sunshine' (2007)
the other evening and for all its 'techno' and the lofty concept of a
'poisened sun/end of all life on Earth' it was less scary (and a good deal
more boring) than the average episode of Shaun The Sheep!

Time changes, things pass...

Indeed. However, it *had* no competition from TV in my youth - it hadn't
arrived in the NE of Scotland when JIS started.

But it did soon afterwards - and I was very disappointed to see the actors
from JIS in the flesh on it (playing other parts) - they looked nothing
like they should have done. ;-)

Streuth, we agree on something!

I couldn't agree more - I transposed the faces of Dan Dare and Digby from
the Eagle to JIS (at least, I think I did) and the actors were simply
*wrong*. Same for the Archers (not a fan, but the fire in the stables was
very and never been surpassed, IMO) - when I saw a photo of the cast once,
they looked nothing like!

Nowadays (although it's been a long time since I listened to a radio play) I
find I 'fit' the characters with the 'nearest actor' in the case of
'unknowns' - which is another way TV craps up radio!

(Didn't Jet Morgan become a Scottish MP...??)
