Miniature or ceiling speakers
A kitchen refit means that my existing Mission wall-mounted
speakers, which I feed from my hi-fi via a speaker switch box, are too large. Has anybody had good experience with either ceiling, or very small wall-mount speakers? A sub-woofer is out of the question, by the way. Chris -- Chris J Dixon Nottingham UK Have dancing shoes, will ceilidh. |

Came from CPC - but not sure if they're still available. They're single 8" units and came with 100v line transformers which I removed. Driven with their own amp (home made) which I eq'd to get the best from them. No shortage of 'bass' from an infinite baffle, though. Sound quite reasonable - far better than the average portable. If I were doing it again I'd probably go for these:- http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_Index/Aerials_Index/Loud_Speakers_Wall/index.html -- *Keep honking...I'm reloading. I've got A-Part 8" speakers fitted in my kitchen and bathroom (distributed by Sennheiser I think). Got them at the Sound & Vision show a couple of years back for £30 each (so £60 per pair), I think they're normally around £50 per speaker. Co-axial design with a tweeter (sadly not adjustable) in the centre. Visually they blend in perfectly and sonically, while not full-blown "hi-fi", they'll easily outperform your average kitchen ghetto blaster. The kitchen speakers are driven from a Technics SU-VX500 amplifier, the bathrooms from a Kenwood KA-3020SE. Because the ceiling is a less than ideal place for speakers I've turned on the Loudness button on the Technics amp and given a quarter turn of bass lift on the Kenwood. Both amps are fed from their own Slim Devices Squeezebox 3. They'll go pretty loud, won't distort below the pain threshold and most importantly won't get covered in grease (in the kitchen) or water (in the bathroom). -- Glenn Richards Tel: (01453) 845735 Squirrel Solutions http://www.squirrelsolutions.co.uk/ IT consultancy, hardware and software support, broadband installation |

Far better than any small wall-mounted speakers, as essentially you are buying just drive units and putting them into a ginormous infinite baffle box - you sure won't need a sub! Geoff MacK |

Thanks for that, those seem really good, and the Ci50 looks like is should be barely noticeable. Chris -- Chris J Dixon Nottingham UK Have dancing shoes, will ceilidh. |
