I once made the error of using a 120 minute tape to save me the bother of changing it mid-performance. Big mistake. d |

Big mistake. That's the sort of DAT I meant, sometimes known as RDAT (because it uses a rotating head drum, like a miniature VCR) to distinguish it from other digital audio tape formats that used stationary heads. The place where I worked changed over from using Betamax PCM to DAT in the early 1990s. Not a wise move as the DAT tapes proved to be far less reliable than the Betamax ones. After I left I retained some personal recordings made on DAT, but couldn't play them as I didn't have a DAT player. So a few years back I borrowed a DAT machine in order to transcribe them to CD-R. Fortunately I had made back-up clone copies of most of them, but some of the material could not be recovered from either the original or the copy. Give me MD any day! David. |

When Richer Sounds were clearing out those DCCs, I got one. The tapes seem to self-erase after a couple of years. Had trouble with Exabyte data storage tapes too. Graham |

Big mistake. 120 minute DAT tapes used the same thickness of tape as shorter lengths so they should be just as reliable as shorter tapes. Or are you mixing up minutes with metres? 120 minutes = 60 metres of tape. You can buy 90 metre tapes which are intended for computer DAT drives and possibly longer. Cheers James. |

Can't remember - but whatever it was, it was thinner than the normal stuff. d |
