Sound card with bit-perfect SPDIF output
As subject line - need a sound card that gives a bit-perfect output on
SPDIF (optical or co-ax), either a PCI or USB device. So that rules out Creative I guess? Any suggestions? -- Squirrel Solutions Ltd Tel: (01453) 845735 http://www.squirrelsolutions.co.uk/ Fax: (01453) 843773 Registered in England: 05877408 |

For £85, it has balanced analogue I/O and S-PDIF digital I/O. As to it being bit-perfect, I don't know of any card that isn't, but then I've never messed about with the cheapest sort. Did a bit more digging... it seems the Creative MP3+ that I'm currently using will in fact do bit-perfect output over SPDIF. The problem appears to be software related in that 'doze forces everything through kmixer. After messing about trying to get working ASIO drivers for the MP3+ I installed the Kernel Streaming plug-in for Winamp that appears to have done the trick. The sound is slightly clearer anyway (MP3+ feeding Arcam Black Box 50 DAC). -- Squirrel Solutions Ltd Tel: (01453) 845735 http://www.squirrelsolutions.co.uk/ Fax: (01453) 843773 Registered in England: 05877408 |

The cards from their semi-professional arm, EMU are fine. Cheers James. |

The MP3+ (external USB card) doesn't... but the EAX crap in the drivers does mangle the bitstream a little. On the other hand I did a bit of digging and picked up a USB soundcard (SPDIF and analogue output only, no inputs) for about £16 from Maplin. This does appear to have bit-perfect output provided you set all the sliders to max on the Windows mixer. Certainly sounds better than the MP3+ did. Figured for 16 quid it was worth a gamble - which appears to have paid off. -- Squirrel Solutions Ltd Tel: (01453) 845735 http://www.squirrelsolutions.co.uk/ Fax: (01453) 843773 Registered in England: 05877408 |
