Noise distortion when playing LP's

Hello all
I have a Project record deck, and recently replaced my Ortofon stylus,
and now I'm picking up noise/feedback type distortion when playing
LP's.
It seems to be picking up vibrations from the next groove ,as when I'm
standing over the record deck I can clearly hear whats soon to come
out of the speakers................
For some reason it always appears worse from the middle of the LP to
the end, and any scratches etc really sound magnified (when standing
directly over the record.
Could this be a problem with the arm weight? (I have tried moving the
little weight onto all 3 available grooves but it makes no difference)
Could the new stylus be the problem.
The most distortion comes from older (1960's) LP's could that be the
cause?
By the way I always clean my records with washing liquid and cold
water when i get them, but this has never been a problem
before...............
Any help much appreciated
Thank you
Alan

Why do you say "next groove"? It is quite common for a stylus to radiate
sounds when playing an LP. Simply due to mechanical movements when the
groove waggles the sylus.

It might help if you checked what actual playing weight (force) you are
using, and if this - and any bias - are in accord with the maker's
recommendations.

The most distortion comes from older (1960's) LP's could that be the
cause?

I don't think I've ever cleaned any record in that way, but I doubt it has
any relevance. :-)

Does what comes out of the speakers sound OK? If it does, and you have the
playing weight correctly set, then you may be worring about nothing.

Slainte,

Jim

** At 33.3 rpm there is a 1.8 second delay between grooves - sometimes
there is a tiny bit of pre- echo, but never is it possible to hear that
acoustically via the stylus alone.

Your story is really quite bizarre.

For some reason it always appears worse from the middle of the LP to
the end, and any scratches etc really sound magnified (when standing
directly over the record.

** Maybe you have a damaged or defective stylus - OR is it simple conical
type.

That would make it ride higher in the groove and so be more sensitive to
scratches.

The most distortion comes from older (1960's) LP's could that be the
cause?

** There is a definite correlation .....

Check your new stylus and PU body for any signs of damage - use a bright
light and a magnifier too.

If all was OK before you replaced the stylus then the problem is probably
the stylus or the way you fitted it.

1. Is the new stylus a microgroove stylus? Is it EXACTLY the same type as
the old one?
2. Is the tracking force correct?
3. Is the anti-skating set up correctly?
4. Is the turntable absolutely horizontal?
