My sad Pure Legato Story
Hi Everyone,
I bought a Pure Legato brand new from a major retailer a couple of years back. I have not used it much at all - only at weekends for a couple of hours. Recently it has developed problems with the CD player, which will no longer eject CDs and my Ry Cooder CD is buried in the internals. Dont get me wrong here, for a micro system the sound is superb, however the non functional CD is very annoying. Worst of all the system is out of warranty. So I contacted Pure Technical support to ask what to do, as I cannot prove it is still in warranty, they refer me to the company that handles repairs whose web site is at http://www.radiofix.co.uk/. (If you take a look at the site among other things you will notice that the Legato 2, which is still being sold, is unrepairable once the 2 year warranty is up.). So I do a bit of trawling around the 'net (google "Pure Legato CD Problems") and find many people with similar problems with the Legato and Legato 2. So it seems to me this is either a design, or manufacturing flaw. Even people who have had the systems fixed have had them fail again. So I am now faced with a bill of about £80 for an exchange unit with a 6 month guarantee. I am really not sure what to do - do I part with the money or stump up for a new CD player to connect to the Legato and never see my dear Ry Cooder CD again...I suppose I could dissect it, remove my CD video the lot and put it on utube - or see if Braniac will blow it up! I would strongly advise those of you who are considering either a Legato or a Legato 2 to take heed of my warning. Those of you with Legato 2s should be worried as they are not repairable by Radiofix outside the 2 year warranty period if their web site is to be believed. I certainly am not going to buy anything made by Pure again. Any comments. Can anyone solve the problem? Yours, very grumpily, Steve |
My sad Pure Legato Story
Hi,
I would try another repairer. My Video logic/Pure DAB tuner had a problem, and I too was refered to the same organisation, and I think it was about £75 to repair. In the end I bought the part I needed from Maplins for £2.75 and everything is fine. REgards Alan "G0XAR" wrote in message ... You probably got your money's worth. Consider a system made from separates (see Richer Sounds for bargains). Graham |

Take a trip to your local CAB or Trading Standards. EU/UK Law now requires consumer items like these to work reliably, or be servicable, or for a replacement of the same functionality to be available for the cost of repair, for a period of up to 5/6 years from the point of sale. If the makers/sellers are directing you to a repair company who can't do this, then they are failing as the 'agent' of the makers/sellers, and it is the responsibility of the makers/sellers to ensure they *can* comply with consumer law. Note, though, that the legal responsibilities are by default with the retailers, not the makers. Slainte, Jim -- Change 'noise' to 'jcgl' if you wish to email me. Yours, very grumpily, Steve To retrieve jammed Ry Cooder CD from the Pure thingy: Disconnect all cables/interconnects/power cables etc. On rear panel are four screws in each corner, remove, and the innards slide out in a tray type thingy. (from rear) The drive is a bog standard laptop type, disconnect it from it's IDE slot type connections. Replace with a bog standard *laptop* type CD-ROM drive for a cost of about a tenner. With the removed knackered drive, the fascia panel is a clip-on type held in place by one screw - remove and place on the tray of new CD-ROM drive. Secure new drive into position. Secure the innards back in the belly of the Pure thingy. Re-make all connections identical to knackered drive. Now on the knackered drive with fascia panel removed you will be able to discern a pin sized hole on front panel, use a pin to insert and this will "click" and the tray locking mechanism is freed, pull tray out and retrieve Ry Cooder CD. Dispose of knackered CD-ROM drive. .. I can't be arsed to look for their link, but now visit the Pure home site, click on the support link and follow the instructions to download updates for your Pure thingy. If I recall correctly this involves downloading then burning to a CD-R, follow the instructions on inserting the CD-R into the Pure thingy and installing the updates involves using a combination of keys on the remote control. |

Important: I should stress that when downloading updates for your budget Pure thingy, deselect "firmware update for CD". Download and follow instructions to install all updates apart from anything for the CD drive. Firmware is important but should only be installed on device it was intended, you will have a new drive installed and any firmware from Pure will be for the original/knackered drive, do not install the Pure site CD firmware on your new/replacement drive............................................. ..... |
