FreeView tuner for radio only.
I'd like to use one of these for radio only where a TV aerial already
exists but would be difficult to add an FM one. However, it needs to be fairly simple to operate - and of course most are meant to be used with a on screen guide of some sort. So one with a display is really needed - and preferably one where the display can give the number you've assigned to a channel via some form of 'favourites' system. The old Sony VTX-D800 comes close as it has a button to go to the radio channels and you can arrange it so button one on the remote gives R1 etc - but it has no display. Cost isn't too much of an issue. -- *Money isn't everything, but it sure keeps the kids in touch * Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound. |

It's got a bright red LED display - mine's hidden as the box is under control of a TiVo and it is rather *bright*. Some owners on digital spy's forums have complained about random sound drop out issues though. Do a search on there for "dv832b sound". I've noticed it as well, happens once in a blue moon. There is a later version dv832bn - that may have this fixed. -- Adrian C |

Does the display just give the actual channel number - or can it give one you've allocated yourself? This device will be mainly used for the BBC - so it would make things easier if R1 displayed 1, and R2 2 etc rather than 701 and 702 - although it's only a minor point. Sounds like the old Philips OnDodgy box that's being used at the moment. ;-) There is a later version dv832bn - that may have this fixed. -- *Save a tree, eat a beaver* Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound. |

I had a quick play, it doesn't seem possible. You can make a short list of favourite channels to quickly hop through, change their label to show in the EPG but the red display stays the same. Manual here http://www.superfi.co.uk/extras/Whar...32B-manual.pdf Have a look at Argos, there seem to be other STBs with a front display of sorts. For instance * Bush DFTA 16 * Acoustic Solutions DV600B * Hitachi HDB72 Digital Set Top Box Got a feeling the innerds of these are all similar. -- Adrian C |

I can suggest an alternative: a small B&W TV fed from the composite o/p of the freeview box. I have a 5" TV, cost all of £20. I tried a small colour TV, but the resolution was so poor, I couldn't read the writing on the menus, but a B&W TV works perfectly. S. -- http://audiopages.googlepages.com |

How about a Kathrein UFS 790? Has a sixteen digit display which announces the radio station explicitly. A bit excessive in some respects, having both satellite and terrestrial tuners and a CI slot, but it's quite a small box and the display makes it usable without a TV (once set up). I've been using a previous model for three years without problems. Justin |
