Live, up front and personal. Several times a week, sometimes for an hour or more at a time. The group of instrumentalists at church has grown to include a French Horn player. I mic her instrument with a Rode NT-1... With a little creative work, I make her instrument sound balanced with two trumpets. So how come you found it necessary to try and fob us of with a midi file then? I never did any such thing. That's not my understanding.... I have the file which Arny claimed to be a real French horn. It was so obviously a Midi sample played from a keyboard, that Arny fooled no-one except himself:-) The discussion can be found on Arny's home group RAO. (Especially foolish thing to do when one of our number is an *industry professional*...!!) You mean that infrequent poster who is a part time instructor at a community college whose ears are so battle-worn that she can't hear what's wrong with the LP format? I'm afraid I know not to whom you refer.... His use of the feminine pronoun leads one to suppose that Arny refers to Jenn, a music professional and teacher, with vast experience in music and musical repertoire, who has gained the respect and admiration of all who have contact with her. As a small Sir Michael ("not a lot of people know that") Caine aside, this same lady, Jenn, was invited by legendary trumpet player Bill "Cat" Anderson (of the Duke Ellington Orchestra and arguably the greatest high-note trumpet player of all time) to his home, to discuss trumpet technique with him. Imagine, what Jenn was able take back to her students. Jenn also makes very good recordings of her own guitar playing at home. She is a very talented and knowledgeable lady. - no wonder Arny dislikes her:-)) OK, I've seen the name Jenn a few times - now I see where it fits in!! ;-) |

But when she does, her well informed comments are well worth reading. She is also dedicated "hunter of vinyl gems" |

She's a true believer in the superiority of vinyl. I can speak for neither Jenn nor Keith, but I have never stated anywhere that I believe vinyl to be technically superior. But I have, on many occasions pointed out that in the case of parallel issues, the vinyl quite often sounds better than the CD due to unneccessary compression, which is, we are told added to meet a market preference. Personally, I am happy to be associated with Jenn. She has an admirable knowledge of music, a charming disposition, and is a very gifted performer. She makes pretty good recordings too. I can see why you don't like her:-) Iain |

Personally, I am happy to be associated with Jenn. IOW you don't feel threatened by her. She has an admirable knowledge of music, She's OK, but I have my own private musical knowledge-base complete with a PhD in music. a charming disposition, She doesn't see through you like some of us do. And a is a very gifted performer. She's good but not that good. She makes pretty good recordings to. As an artist, typically with someone else choosing the mics and twisting the knobs. Take out the artist part, and she's something like you, Iain! I can see why you don't like her:-) She's calmed down some over the years, which is a good thing. |

In my alphabet, P is for piano not paranoia. She has an admirable knowledge of music, She's OK, but I have my own private musical knowledge-base complete with a PhD in music. He/she doesn't seem to have taught you anything so far:-) There is a huge difference between having an aquaintance who knows about music and knowing about it yourself:-) My wife speaks fluent Russian, that doesn't help me one iota when I pick up the insert card of a Russian made CD. What does your PhD thinks of your screeching sopranos with intonation +/- 1/4 tone? Or what does he/she thinks about the horrendous distortion you manage to add to their already dire performance of "Domine" Jenn And a is a very gifted performer. She's good but not that good. The C17th English poet Alexander Pope and his " Epistle to Dr Arbuthnot" sums up your attitude to the talents of others rather nicely: "Damn with faint praise, assent with civil leer And, without sneering, teach the rest to sneer" I wager a penny to a pound that in your Baptist church volunteer recording activities, you will never meet, let alone get to record, a player of Jenn's level of talent. She makes pretty good recordings to. As an artist, typically with someone else choosing the mics and twisting the knobs. It is my understanding that she did these recordings alone at home. Charming, erudite, and gifted. I can see why you don't like her:-) |
