Found the hum on the AEG Solidtube tonight - after swapping 3 valves to

OK, not so righteous it seems - the hum has become erratic and irrational
and it hums with the switch the other way now, so I guess it's gonna have
to go off for a pro repair.

(Too fiddly and will probably need parts....)


Before you send it off. A colleague tells me that this mic
has a spring through which the case is grounded.
Check that it is making good contact.


Done that, Iain and also trapped a bit of aluminium foil between the body
halves to ensure a bond, but it really is the switch - which means it is
likely be a coil on the board. Way too fiddly to be soldered with a heated
shovel and will want dinky little parts near impossible to get outside the
pro repair circuit, I suspect.

There's no rush to fix it (check your emails) and I can drop it into (or
post it to) a place in Letchworth, just down the road. It's probably/almost
certainly going to cost a wunnah or so to fix, which is what I budgeted for
when I bid on it knowing *full well* that it was almost certainly going to
have a real reason for someone getting rid!

If you mean Sound Technology, they are very good

It will still be a reasonably-priced purchase even after repair.

These things seem to cost over 700 quid, which means I can afford to have it
repaired and it will still be a bit of a bargain for what it will have cost
me. The sound quality is there - much better than the Chinese valve mic I
had here (for even more money) and which was also noisy!!

Thank you for that - I did find them and looked at the website, but I
thought it looked a bit too slick and 'big time' for a little repair to a
****ty old eBay mic! Besides, I know where Sound Technology is and they
can't be too big - plus it's virtually on my doorstep! :-)

IIRC, Abbey Road studios had mics that were originally U47 and the converted
to U48s so its difficult to see from this distance - but definitely
Neumanns.
