A little ipod advice ?
Hi,
I have a moderate ( old ) set-up involving a NAD 3120 amp + NAD 4130 tuner + Arcam alpha 7 cd + Rega planar 3 Deck + B&W DM 602 s3 speakers. I have been mulling over introducing an iPod into the system but don't really know where to begin. I've looked around but just get lost! I have also thought a bit about upgrading the whole setup altogether but tbh it does a reasonable job at the moment but the upgrade bug is tickling :) I was wondering if anyone might shed a bit of light as to where I should be looking. As I say, the iPod introduction would be a good starter and then maybe take it from there? Any ideas would be appreciated. tia. Stuart. |

I would keep your current set-up and use these two contraptions together: http://thecoolgadgets.com/ipod-dock-onkyo-nd-s1/ http://www.cambridgeaudio.com/summary.php?PID=320 -- Froggy Blackadder: There's something wrong with your fiancée, sir. You could: 1. Buy a 3.5mm to stereo phono lead - 50p; 2. Get an ipod dock with audio outputs. I got a poshish generic with remote for about £10 on ebay; 3. Variations on Froggy's theme - you don't need a DAC. I bought one, though, and I'm quite pleased with it; 4. If digital music is your future you could look to a media PC, media server or something like a Mac Mini. If you have an iPod Touch or iphone, they work very well with a PC or a Mac, using the Remote App. I use a Mac Mini/ipod Touch, but that does a whole bunch of things including video. And you're looking at £500 odd. Your hifi looks good to me - sort of system you might think about changing the speakers if perhaps they're too big for the room; I quite rate the ones you have. Rob |

Rob Many thanks for the replies. I noticed that there was a price premium for the DAC etc and was wondering about upgrading my amp to something a little more in keeping with iPod inputs etc. Reason for this is just moving with the times I guess but the existing amp does have a duff headphone connector at the front! I do have a little more ideas now though. The iPod idea is really more to do with my increasing collection of music and places to store stuff! CDs all over the place! so I am just dipping toe into that arena. My pc is not in the same room so that may present problems. Presently I just connect the iPod ( Classic ) via a usb. I still do like the speakers and aren't desperate to lose them yet :) Stuart. |
