Guide price for Quad ESL 57 speakers
Having finally succumbed to a new pair of loudspeakers (Quad ESL 2805), I
now have a pair of black Quad electrostatics (ESL 57) for sale. However, I only have a vague idea as to what would be a fair price for these. There do not seem to be many of them sold these days in the usual places, like EBay, and asking prices of the few I have seen have varied greatly. I have had the speakers for around twenty years and would ideally like them to go to a good home where they would be used and enjoyed. They were cleaned internally and serviced a few years ago and are in good working order. The serial numbers differ by two and I believe they were manufactured in the late 1970's. Any advice on pricing would be much appreciated. Thanks. -- Chris Isbell Southampton, UK. |

If you search on eBay right now you will get 6 results: four of which are pairs of speakers which include a pair of One Thing serviced at £1,250 BIN, a pair with one one bid at 9.99/PU only from Barnet, Herts and a pair with one bid at 99p but with a chunky 185 shipping charge. The first one in the list with 5 days to go is a 700 quid or Best Offer for a pair of 'seller refurbished' (Auction/Item No. 250674514092) which may be an off-putter for many (includes me) but would probably give the best indicator if you keep an eye on the auction - which IMO is poorly timed, being right in the middle of the holiday season! One problem is your extreme location - fie were in the market for a pair I would expect to have to fetch them and would want an inspection and audition of them first in any case. Then I would flap cash in your face and 'take them off your hands' for 500 quid or even less if there was anything unspectacular about them! :-) |

The feet exhibit chipping at the bottom which I will address on a later ocasion. I think they were priced right according to what they were and the work needed. They do feature IEC power sockets which are so much better than anything used in the olden days. Mine is the gold set, and I used a bottle of Victorian Mahoganny for staining applied gently with a brush. have not obthered to laquer the panels afterwards as they look fine on their own. I never put my fingers on them anyway as I like to use the part on top at the middle where it appears the wood is meant to grip onto. In all fairness I'd have bought them at 500 pounds too in above condition. -Mikkel |

Do a search on eBay and once you get to the results page, click on 'Show completed listings' on the left hand frame. That will show you what the last few actually sold for. D |

That items like these are simply 'worth' whatever someone who happens to want one at the time is willing to pay. Those who paid most simply drop out for later auctions. A dealer may be willing to wait and keep the price they are asking until someone finally comes along who will pay. They have to judge the time they will wait against how much extra that may give than a quick sale. But auctions simply find the highest bidder at the time of the auction. I just sold a pair of cosmetically challenged but excellent sounding ESLs from 1961 for over £300 on eBay. A fair price during a recession. Now I can stop extolling their virtues and point out how horribly directional they are.... -- Eiron. |
