Is BBC TV news in HD at home?
I've taken to watching BBC daily news on the local PBS station which is HD.
The BBC news is always SD. Is that PBS's fault or is BBC TV new still SD at home? |

I'm not sure where that would come from, but news cameras - both studio and location - are usually the last to be upgraded. Drama first then sport is the rule. ;-) -- *It's o.k. to laugh during sexŒ.Œ.just don't point! Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound. |

From digitalspyforum: "The BBC has said that they plan to launch a HD news service when they move from Television Centre to new facilities at Broadcasting House at Portland Place sometime between 2011-2012 which has been delayed as it should have happened in 2010. In short they have said there is no point upgrading the current studios and then leaving them. " |

Typical BBC - everything on a new installation must also be new. And often unproved. -- *Don't join dangerous cults: Practice safe sects* Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound. |

The HD/SD situation for US national news is a mixed bag. The main studio work, even large for local stations (e.g., the 3 major network stations in a mid-sized market like Detroit) is good sharp HD. There also some on-location work that is HD. However, a lot of SD segments still get mixed in, even for national news. The SD clips are often "enhanced" with motion video side panels to conceal the fact that they are 4:3. The quality of the HD varies. I wouldn't be surprised if some of it was cropped from SD recordings. The slides and generated video such as statistics, maps, and weather information is usually HD and very sharp. First tier prime time entertainment shows such as "American Idol" are gorgeous HD. A lot of day time network game shows, talk shows, and soaps are still either SD or SD with side panels. The prime time dramas are HD but the quality varies. Prime time sports and most cable sports are generally HD with some SD pre-recorded segments. NASCAR races have HD in-car cameras whose resolution seems to be limited by the ability of the remote operators to zoom, focus and pan. |

It's at least a decade since UK broadcasters produced anything in 4:3. The only material broadcast in 4:3 these days are complete programmes from the archives. If archive clips are included in new documentaries they are usually cropped top and bottom to 16:9, often at the expense of the original composition. But a lot of material is still produced in 16:9 SD. David. |
