Not sure if I am previous in mentioning this. But IIUC the BBC are now
announcing that they plan to make the XHQ 320kb/s stream permanently
available as 'HD Radio' for Radio 3 listeners to the iPlayer.

Slainte,

Jim

Yes .. so those with poor and intermitted net connections will no doubt
have dropped and interrupted listening.

Pity as suggested they didn't up the rates on satellite, much simpler
cheaper and less wiring and no need for the PC in the living room as
well as neigh on national coverage....

IIUC The 320kb will be provided as an 'HD Radio' alternative choice to a
'standard' lower rate.

However I did experience about one or two 'interruptions' per hour with the
320kb experiment. So I'm hoping this aspect will be improved. I'm currently
having my connection 'retrained' to see if that may help.

The BBC spokesman on R4 PM yesterday said it involved a complete new route
from source to listener. I find this very hard to believe. They played a
clip on PM in 'normal and HD' which Eddie Mair said was like night and
day. ;-) I was in the workshop - so only listening casually, albeit on a
reasonable system fed from FreeView, and did think the HD clip had better
ambience. But perhaps just the power of suggestion...

It sounded good on the FM radio in the car while driving home. :-)

If that was Rupert Brun I can't say I recall him saying exactly that. And
I'm sure he knows how it is done. But I'll have a check on what he said
when I can via... Listen Again. :-)

My understanding (inc some info from the BBC) is that they are simply using
the Coyopa systems with the higher rate settings.

They played a clip on PM in 'normal and HD' which Eddie Mair said was
like night and day. ;-)

IIRC Rupert Brun then pointed out that although it may have been obvious in
the studio, home listeners may not have been able to hear any difference as
it needed a suitably (XHQ) route.

I think the interview I heard was in the last 10 mins of the program. So
I'd recommend others also give it a listen to find out what was said. I
found what was said by Rupert Brun fairly decent. But I may have missed
something as I heard it whilst doing something else.

I was in the workshop - so only listening casually, albeit on a
reasonable system fed from FreeView, and did think the HD clip had

Can't say I heard any difference in the demo on the program.

But perhaps just the power of suggestion...

Stay tuned. :-)

Jim

Did you listen to any of the Proms via the XHQ 320k stream?

I'm curious to know if anyone else heard 'gaps' at times - particularly if
they occured at the same times I heard them. Not yet clear to me why they
occurred.

I didn't notice any problems during "Pictures at an Exhibition" and
enjoyed the sound quality.

In this context, what does 'HD' stand for?
