So what are you saying ... a 200 quid DVD would be sonically better than
a 200 quid dedicate CDP or there would be no audible difference between
either?

That cannot be determined without a listening test.

He does - it's on his head. (He's got a little pointy hat with '****'
embroidered on it - it fits all the way up to the very top.... :-)

However, this time (if it's who I think it is) he's right - CD is so ****e
(compared to vinyl) you might just as well play it on a DVD-Video player,
for what good it'll do.

Yes. And you point is?

The cost and/or manufacturer of the device are irrelevant.

Certainly are, if you're talking 'digital'.......

However, the point of the "chap who advised looking at the DVD" is that
they should ALL sound the same. No audible difference whatsoever.

A DVD player will suit most people.

Now who's being snobby?

think the point was made in the context of a suggestion of what might
best fit his needs, rather than a detailed review of audio performance.

The poster asked: "I'm looking to purchase a new CD player and am
looking for the best product to purchase."

You strategically left out the £200. Perhaps the original poster could
expand on his requirements, rather than have the two of us guessing.

fact, he ("chap who advised looking at the DVD") would further claim
that any store bought budget DVD player would have no audible different
between say a £2000 Meridian (pick another if you like) CDP.

I do not remember reading the words "£2000", "Meridian", or "CDP" during
the thread.

Don't be a ****.

No need to get abusive. Not everyone is an "audiophile".

I'll reinstate the part of my post which you snipped.

That is as
far as his ideology (digital dogma) goes, how about yours?

I don't use ideology or dogma. I just listen and form conclusions.

I am talking about anything, anywhere.

There's no snobbery there. You have to remember that huge numbers of
people have crappy integrated hifis bought out of the likes of Argos and
Dixons. A DVD player with an amp would likely be a step up.

The OP asked for a sub-£200 CDP. To say 'he's probably only got a crappy
Argos/Dixon's hifi and a DVDP would likely be a step up' is errant
snobbery....
