OK, a reprieve then....
A pal of mine* who is one of my 'inner circle' (does triodes and vinyl but not horns only due to lack of space) has a son who wants to record microphone to computer (guitar and vocals): He knows I do a little of that myself and has asked me for advice but they want USB connectivity and four channels which is over my head: I have no experience, I only do mono or two channels stereo - sometimes direct to computer via USB, sometimes via a stereo hifi amplifier using XLR to RCA Phono leads. So the question is: Who is that 'name' that stands out for decent but good VFM recording gadgets (mixers and the like) - is it Behringer? (Buggered if I can remember!) And, if so, is there any particular recommendation? Also, if he wants 4 channels now, what the thinking: get more channels as he is bound to need them as time goes by? I've no real idea. Also also, I am under the impression that M-Audio is reputable and reliable and I have said as much - is that correct, any caveats? TIA *Sound familiar? :-) |

And, if so, is there any particular recommendation? Behringer's audio interfaces are generally simple and cheap. Their UCA 202 is probably their best product in this category. Also, if he wants 4 channels now, what the thinking: get more channels as he is bound to need them as time goes by? I've no real idea. Nor do I. 4 could be enough channels for a guy with a guitar and a voice for a long time. Also also, I am under the impression that M-Audio is reputable and reliable and I have said as much - is that correct, any caveats? M-Audio is good mid-priced supplier, http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_u...rackUltra.html looks like a good choice. It has 4 mic preamps each with its own dedidicated channel. Two of the mic inputs can also handle line-level inputs. The remaining 4 inputs are line level only. Possible future expansion could come via up to 4 additional mic preamps. |

OK, but that's not what they are looking for. Also, if he wants 4 channels now, what the thinking: get more channels as he is bound to need them as time goes by? I've no real idea. I'm thinking if anyone is any good (garage standards) then it usually isn't long before another guitar turns up - and maybe a washboard and a tea-chest bass! That looks more like it; I will forward the link. Many thanks. Now to sort myself out - this was this afternoon's effort: http://www.moirac.adsl24.co.uk/shown...OfBirdland.wav and I ain't happy with it. The clart melts into the mix but the (alto) sax is too far forward (and too dry). I think we can probably cure that by getting Swimbo to take a step backward with the alto but it's not very satisfactory - I haven't figured out how to adjust the gain with the USB mic in SoundForge. (Iain on the tenor is quite superb, isn't he? ;-) |
