ASAP.
So that'll be a 'don't know', then?
Tell me, do you go to the bother of actually typing out things or just cut
and paste?
Is it true you look like a down and out Les Patterson?
Or is that too big an insult? To Sir Les?

I'm sure you can forgive him Charles. He was, after all, an American.

** Allegedly it was first said by Jerry Lewis to Stanley Kubrick.
Who replied " You can if you freeze it " .

** But he developed his ideas while studying at Cambridge University.
Story goes, he had a pair mic lines installed running from his room to the
nearby chapel that was used for musical performances - choirs and such.
The sound quality direct from the mics was, naturally enough, quite superb.
But when he used a 1/4 inch tape recorder, the playback was spoilt by noise.
He figured, there must be a way to fix this ....

One of the "great's" of audio has just passed away ...

** Great at what, exactly ???
The only remarkable thing that Ray Dolby ever achieved was to disprove the
widely held belief, among audio novices and experts alike, that was quite
impossible to polish a turd.
By that you mean Analogue tape media which as you may well remember was
the only viable medium for recording both pro and domestic for many
years until the advent of usable digital media...

There was a rather strange tribute to him on R4 earlier today where they
spoke to his name-alike popstar. He did a good job of demonstrating how
Dolby-B could help cut down intrusive tape noise of audiocassette.
I heard this. I thought it a misleading demo. The speaker implied that
you just "push the Dolby button" on playback to reduce the hiss. Surely
it should have been said that the RECORDING had to be with Dolby on
before any benefit could be observed on playback?
Yes very much the case for the B and C versions, but of course it would
have reduced the "noise" even more if it hadn't been encoded ;/.....
