Behringer ADCs, etc
I'm experimenting with a Behringer UCA202 ADC+DAC but I'm also interested
in some of their better models like the UMC202 which can provide 96k/24. (Plus also perhaps alternative makes.) Anyone had any experience of these for playing or recording via USB? And any particular suggestions for a *UK* dealer I might buy from who will deal via email/letter/etc rather than being an anonymous website into which you have to poke credit card details? Be good to be able to talk to a dealer who has a clue and can advise, etc. FWIW I have a UCA202 and have got it working OK. But its limited to 48k/16 and I'd like to experiment with something better as a way using my own software to let me use my computers as audio test stations, etc. So this isn't just for music - although that clearly matters! :-) One aspect of the 'better' Behringer goes outside my experience as it uses XLR+TRS jacks for input. Are these both going to be balanced? If so, do they also float so you can't just use +ve against ground? I'm not familiar with such 'prosumer' kit that is clearly aimed at people who want a 'small studio' rather than domestic hifi. I've tried to send an email to Behringer via their website forms as they seem to have no public email address. I'll see if I get any reply. Cheers, Jim -- Please use the address on the audiomisc page if you wish to email me. Cheers, Jim **I just recieved my one of these: http://quantasylum.com/content/Products/QA400.aspx So far, I cannot get it to work with my desktop (64 bit Win 7), but that is not unexpected, since I often experience issues with this machine. When I get a chance, I'll try it with my laptop (32 bit Win XP Pro) and report. -- Trevor Wilson www.rageaudio.com.au |

When I get a chance, I'll try it with my laptop (32 bit Win XP Pro) and report. Interesting. :-) Thanks for pointing it out. It looks useful from my POV in having unbalanced phonos for in and out rather than balanced XLR/jacks. So more convenient for work with domestic kit. However I'd not be wanting their software for any test/analysis processes as I'd write my own. (Indeed, I've have already started on that.) So the key details for me would be things like if it shows up as a fairly standard USBAudio set of inputs and outputs. If so, I can then use it with Linux and RO. If not, no use to me. I'll see if I can contact them or find out more. The Behringer UCA202 does so show, and I've already used it for test recordings and signals using RISC OS. The problem being it is limited to a max of 48k/16. I've now had an auto-reply from Behringer along the lines of "We'll reply soon" so am hoping for more substance in a day or two. I bought a copy of 'Sound on Sound' on Friday for the first time in yonks and had a look at the ads. One does mention a Steinberg UR22 which says it is 24/192k. But gives almost no other details. Only 99 quid, though. Anyone know about this? Will Windows let you get a listing of the QA400's USB endpoint details, etc? I don't use Windows so would need some details to know if it is stuck in a 'Windows only' ghetto or not. Hence unless I can get info I'd need to get a device so I can probe and test its USB interface. Jim -- Please use the address on the audiomisc page if you wish to email me. I'd also be interested in if you contacted quantasylum direct when buying it, and got a useful response from anyone there. I've emailed them but had zero response. If it will do what I want I'd buy one. But I need them to answer some questions. Failing that if you get it working you may be able to say. Similarly, as yet I've no more from Behringer. Just had their automated "We'll get back to you within a working day"... last Friday. I sometimes feel that some makers don't actually want to *sell* what they make! :-/ FWIW I also looked at the specs of a 192k/24 ADC made by steinberg. But only *one* of its two inputs had a line level option. And did this by simply attenuating down to mic levels. Not so good for my purposes. I need two inputs as synched stereo, decent line level. Unbalanced much preferred. So the QA400 looks like a candidate. Jim -- Please use the address on the audiomisc page if you wish to email me. It seems that their device does *not* use the standard Release 1/2 USB Audio protocols. If that's correct it will be useless from my POV as I need to be able to write open programs for platforms like Linux and RISC OS. Not be tied by a binary driver or their own software. Shame as otherwise it looks good. I'd be interested to hear how you get on with it. FWIW I've now had an email from Behringer about their UMC202, etc. I've asked them about this but not had a reply as yet. So I may just give up waiting and buy one, fingers crossed. I also emailed studiospares, but haven't yet had a response. I'll prod them again, if only because I'd probably buy from them. Although the lack of response makes me think maybe I'd be better looking elsewhere... :-/ Jim -- Please use the address on the audiomisc page if you wish to email me. Focusrite 2.2 was Behringer ADCs, etc
Making progress with this seems like wading though treacle!
I've been exchanging discussions with someone who has an E-MU 0202 and it looks like that doesn't fully work with Linux so is ruled out. No-one (inc Studiospares) seem to be bothered to respond to emails from potential buyers of the items I've been asking about. At present the most likely bet seems to be the Focusrite scarlett 2i2. However *they* have yet to answer an email I sent. But maybe they will soon, who knows? Failing any info I'll try and buy a 2i2. Which comes to the question of which dealer? I'm reluctant to buy from Studiospares given their total failure to show any sign they give a hoot for potential customers. Anyone have experience with a UK retailer who sell things like this for 'prosumer studio/music' and who actually will *answer* emails. Even more, then be willing to allow me to buy via letter+cheque rather than CC over a website? Given the poor way people so far have reacted I admit I'm reluctant to give any of them the trust of having my card details, etc. Jim -- Please use the address on the audiomisc page if you wish to email me. Got one of they, what do you want to do with it?.. Intially I want to experiment and see if I can use it OK with Linux and RISC OS. From the web it 'looks promising' but I won't know until I can run some USB Audio probe and test routines on one. If it follows the published USB audio class standards it should work. Once I can get past that successfully I want to do two things. 1) Experiment with using it to record and see how good the results may be. The aim being that it will serve as an example I can write about for people who want to make 96k/24 digital copies of their analogue LPs, etc. Using the OS of their choice. i.e. not just Windows/Macs but also Linux, RISC OS and any other system which can handle devices using the USB Audio standards. 2) Develop some of the audio test and measurement programs I use so that I can release them free and open source for others. Who could then use them on 'any OS' to do their own audio checks on equipment. Initially I'd adapt the 'scope/fft analyser' and 'sig gen' progs I have, but plan to add in IQ tests (timing) wow and flutter, etc. Erm... if I could maybe borrow yours for a week to try that'd help. :-) Failing that or a reply from Focusrite I'll just have to cross my fingers, buy one, and hope I can get it to work OK.
