CD pre-emphasis
 

Possibly a dumb question but do any CDs use pre-emphasis?
Possibly some early ones?
And do modern CD/DVD players have the corresponding de-emphasis facility?
I have an old test CD with pre-emphasis on some tracks.
Perhaps I should do some measurements with it.

One thing I do notice on some very old CDS from 1983 is a lack of believable
bass. I think this has more to do with using masters tweaked for vinyl
than pre emphasis though.
Certainly modern remastered versions of Abba and Dire Straights originals
sound a lot better than the old ones.

Yes, some discs do flag this. However in some cases this may be due to the
disc producers setting the flag in error.

Harder to tell which players do or don't take it into account. But I
suspect most 'ripping' programs don't.

Denon Audio Technical CD 38C39-7147.
GoldWave doesn't de-emphasise when ripping tracks.
I haven't found any other software that will show the flag.

Denon Audio Technical CD 38C39-7147. GoldWave doesn't de-emphasise when
ripping tracks. I haven't found any other software that will show the
flag.

cdparanoia does report on the demephasis flag (by track) but I'm not
certain how reliable it may be in what it says as I haven't been able to
check what it does. However it does *not* apply de-emphasis. Just rips
the values from the CD 'as is'. So you need to then use something like
sox to generate a file with de-emphasis applied. If you do, you may
want to output 24 bit for the result if you're not happy with the
dithering in sox.
