P-Mount bd and dd
 

Firstly,

Thank you all for the advice/suggestions in the Vinyl to digital thread.
All carefully noted.

I'm currently looking on ebay at turntables, getting a feel for the
market. Here's 2 questions:

1) Sellers seem a bit coy on cartridge types and I'm assuming that I
could be looking at cartridge/stylus replacement if I purchase a tt. (I
couldn't find my beloved M75 in the loft)

Should I avoid tts that use P-mount carts? The impression I get is that
they were designed as lower end items and I've read that there doesn't
seem much choice among 'audiophile quality' P-mount carts.

2) Direct drive. They seem to be fetching rather higher prices than belt
drive types. Again, I've read some of the pros/cons regarding belt wear
and dd motor noise.

**Depends on a number of factors. Including:

* Choice is future cartridge types is somewhat restricted.
* Tone arms which accept P-Mount cartridges TEND to be less good than
standard mount types.
* Your future requirements.

P-Mount cartridges and arms are satisfactory, without being outstanding
(though there are a tiny handful of exceptions).


2) Direct drive. They seem to be fetching rather higher prices than belt
drive types. Again, I've read some of the pros/cons regarding belt wear
and dd motor noise.

**A really good belt drive can offer performance equal to a really good
DD. OTOH, there are possibly more important factors to be considered.
These include:

* Suspension systems.
* Tone arm quality.

A really good DD will likely cost more than a roughly equivalent belt
drive. Motor noise, with a really good DD (like, say a high end Denon or
Technics) is not going to be a problem, assuming the bearings are in
good condition. Same deal with a belt drive. A bearing in poor condition
will contribute noise to the system.


Your opinions please?

**If you can locate one, a Denon DP59L (DD) will provide excellent
performance, with a range of cartridges, for a couple of centuries. A
Rega is hard to beat, for the money, with new turntables. All manual and
belt drive, but the tone arm is excellent.

**One more thing about DD tables: ONLY consider quartz lock types.
Anything else is pretty much sub-par.

Well, being blind I needed a device that was pretty automatic, and although
initially warned off of parallel tracking arms, the one on the SL5 seems
pretty good. It did need some tlc to put new grease on the mechanism to stop
noise and sticking but is well enginneered. its Direct drive and I had to
put an ortofon cart on it to make it sound less Japanese..:-)


Technics makde some nice turntables back then.
It has a fine adjustment for speed rather stupidly placed on its bottom
though. Who thought that one up?
