Just to be different, I own on vinyl probably over 25 of the albums he
http://www.iclassics.com/iclassics/catalog_line_detail.jsp?catalogLineId=33

One minute samples seem to be available for every track, a nice surprise.

Unfortunately that list is sorted by title rather than artist;- (my purpose
in posting is to encourage the exploration of new genres, and in particular
ECM jazz - some favourites, which may show further artists works, might be:)

Bass Desires (and also Marc Johson's Bass Desires - Second Sight )
(almost any album by each of the individual artists on those two is great)
Pat Metheny Group [ anything of his on ECM, rather than the later Geffen]
Rypdal: Blue [Terje Rypdal] (nice bass on Blue & I Disremember)
tread carefully - his guitar sound can be a bit much for some in some;-)
Special Edition [Jack De Johnette] (anything with JdeJ on usually)
Saluzzi: Andina [Dino Saluzzi] Included just to show how amazingly
captivating and inventive a solo bandoneon can be. I have several of his.
Weber: Orchestra [Eberhard Weber] (fantastic acoustic bass player)

Many others ... any decent record store should have an ECM section!

Hope this makes a change from the usual pop pap... ducks( ;=})

If ECM, and especially Eberhard Weber, is what grooves your truffles, then
it's probably worth your while seeking out some of Jan Gabarek's stuff.
'Twelve moons' or 'Legend of the seven dreams' are the best introductions.
You might also get on with David Torn's 'Cloud about mercury'.

Many others ... any decent record store should have an ECM section!

Quite so - and if it doesn't, is it really decent?

And it's always good to hear Eberhard Weber's distinctive playing on the odd
Kate Bush track too. Does he crop up anywhere else that I wouldn't expect
to find him?

I've just been watching the Joni Mitchell 'Shadows and Light' convert
movie - with Metheny and Pastorious (plus Lyle Mays and Don Alias).
Contains an awesome bass solo in which Jaco uses a delay to build up
circling lines of bassness. Well worth checking out for any Jacophiles

As always, I can only answer this in terms of the last five I've
listened to -- otherwise we'll get to 500 rather than 5 :-)

Grateful Dead "Dick's Picks 30" (NYC, 3/25 & 28/72)
String Cheese Incident "Outside Inside"
King Crimson "LIve In Guildford, 11/13/72" (KC Collectors Club #24)
Little Feat "Down Upon The Suwannee River"
Van Morrison "What's Wrong With This Picture"

I worked with a session musician in 1990 who had done a US tour with
Supertramp (covering for band illness I think) and he said that he

Prince - Emancipation 3 CD set (still counts as one)
Sarah McLachlan - Afterglow
Kate Rusby - Underneath the Stars
REM - Automatic For the People
Equation - The Lucky Few

ah hell ... make it the half dozen ...

Kealer - My Worst Enemy

That's out of the 29 currently in around my CDP and computer desk. Tidy up
time.

I've just ordered the new Sarah Mclachlan off Amazon, so glad to hear
it's one of your favourites.

BTW, the first 'Equation' CD (the unreleased line-up with Cara Dillon as
well as Kathryn) is now out. Very good. (I think 'The lucky Few' is
the poorest of the three, but that might be because of the atrocious
recording quality that has been commented on many times in other
places.)

Sounded a bit disappointing on the first few listens, say compared to
'Fumbling Towards Ecstasy' but after about half a dozen or so more spins I
started to get into it a lot more. IMO she should try a different producer
next time (let hope that's not another 4 year wait) the Pierre Marchand
association is wearing a bit thin. Maybe Daniel Lanois producing and
contributing could add some new magic.

BTW, the first 'Equation' CD (the unreleased line-up with Cara Dillon as

The new one 'First Name Terms' also features Cara on vocals and the rest of
the Lakeman bros. Haven't heard that one yet.

If you like Cara Dillion then her own two solo albums are excellent. Of
course I would say that, considering :) ... both these have the Lakeman's
connection as well.

Yes, I've got those. The second one is especially good. (Can't get
occasional Kate Bush comparisons out of my mind! Strange for a Northern
Irish folkie)

(I think 'The lucky Few' is

Very true, The recording is totally dull and lifeless, which is a pity as
the musical content IMO is very good, albeit a bit Fleetwood Mac in parts.

If you like this sort of stuff (female vocals) have you tried the Poozies?

Not keen on them, nor on Kate Rusby's work really.

Do you know the Welsh band 'Fernhill'? Very Breton influenced but very
competent and innovative.

I only have 'Whilia' but have ordered their other three CDs from Amazon.
