I think you could say we've been having a "wet spell". Not much in the way
of blue sky or sunshine. But the forcasts now predict we will swap this for
"cold" next week.

The Mid-West US has had record snowfall ...

A few months ago I had "Hive 2" fitted to my heating system. It's a
decent scheduling and control system that gives me control of my
heating from wherever I happen to be in the world. I thought it might
be a fun gimmick to show people, but it has been anything but that. My
gas usage over the autumn period is down 38% over last year, and it
looks like it is going the same way for winter. I know this is a warm
winter, but so was last year's, so I think the comparison stands up.
That's probably the quickest return on a £150 investment I will see
for a while.

I can see it might help if you are the sole occupant of your house - but
altering things while your partner etc is indoors might not go down too
well. ;-)

Mine allows me to set the temperature for different times of the day. I've
got it set for getting up, daytime and evening. If we're away, I simply
switch it off and rely on the frost protection setting.

Can't really be bothered with the faff of altering it for an evening out,
etc. This old house takes ages to get up to temperature anyway, and the
weather compensation on this boiler seems to do a good job.

Yes, I live alone - and the nature of my job is that I sometimes find
myself heading abroad rather than home in the evening, so remote
control is a huge bonus. I went to Vienna over Christmas for a holiday
(no, not alone), and the holiday mode did exactly what I needed -
heating off, but frost protection set at 7 degrees.

I can see that messing with the temperature while the other half is at
home might not be good for domestic harmony.

Yes, I've got something similar (Heatmiser), marvellous things. My
particular version has a security flaw, making it eligible for a full
refund. I'll get a Hive when I get round to it - I gather they're the
best for the money.

I'd imagine you'd need a smartphone to get the best out of them (which
I'd assume you have).
