wouldn't trust myself not to fill the boot with nostalgia HiFi purchases

A few years ago it would have been worse if you lived in the SE corner
of the land. There used to be a very good secondhand hi-fi dealer -
Steve's Hi-Fi - in Hastings. Good stuff at competitive prices, but
sadly since closed down.

Heh. About five years ago, this particular event was frequented by many
African and Chinese visitors that had it seems had recently flown in, or
their based locals been sent on collection errands. All to add to their
collections of British Hi-Fi..

I wouldn't recommend that long distance dedication these days, but at
least get to see one of these if you are in the area if like you
tinkering, talking, haggling, reminiscing etc....

It runs twice a year. Have an idea what ye want to buy/spend before ye
turn up, or ye will be distracted and maybe end the day with poor WAF.

There are other similar events around the country, if someone could pipe
in with locations and websites?

I think the shop is still there and empty, as it was 5 years ago when I
first noticed it.
There are occasionally interesting items of hifi in the Kings Road Bazaar.
Not so long ago there was a pair of ESLs and a Quad amp in different stalls,
and the two dealers didn't think of linking them together, which would have
increased the chance of selling them quickly and the likely profit.

I intend to visit the audiojumble. Anyone else going so we can meet up
and put the world to rights?

Both, some regular civvies seem to make a living on it as well. There's
more interest in tasty old proper kit rather than run of the mill "now
distressed" mass market. More wood & silver than black and late digital.

Yeah, come on a reconnaissance then.

Maybe bring gear photos and talk to folks - it's a large bit of a social
and dealers, yeah well they have their job. See if others have any
success selling what you might be getting shot of :-)

As in other places sticker prices are always a guide, and so is the time
left to the end of the event, where there then be vultures and traders
with the same "I/you really don't want to take this home, how about..."
discussion.

I typically spend most of the day down there, head off to a nearby
"oriental buffet club" chinese with whatever pound coins I have
remaining. An enjoyable day, and then the autopsy ...

Today's audiojumble at Tonbridge.

A pleasant hour or so followed by a ramble around the town.

Someone was demonstrating a pair of Rogers LS5/8s fed from a Revox
and a Nagra-D digital tape deck. There must have been something wrong
with my ears because it was just a confused noise within.

A pair of Quads, Martin Logans, and more old junk than you could wish for,
including many Garrard 401s, SME arms and even a couple of V15s.
And a 1970s ICL 200MB removable disk pack, of use to nobody.

The 5/8s should have sounded pretty good. But the crossovers do some
fairly involved things, so may well have been below par.

I was amused by the Lowther speakers for sale. Two 9" full-range (with
whizzer cone)
drivers side by side in the same cabinet, and rear horn loading.
They must be very directional, horizontally, but not vertically.

Then there was the second demo, which was rather flash.
A local speaker builder, I forgot the name after the shock of seeing the
prices.
Bookshelf speakers with separate bass boxes, active crossover and six
channels of power amp.
The centre of the midrange drivers had been messily filled in with
something,
either to add mass or stiffness. Whatever it was, it would have looked
better
without the fingerprints. Sounded impressive - perhaps excessively so!

I've been quite satisfied with my IMF PM III (vintage 1974) since I
recapped the x-overs last year. A bit bright at first but have settled
down now.

Mind you, nothing to be done if the actors mumble (as in SS-GB). Glad
to discover that some of them *do* mumble, and it's not just me.

You've not heard it being discussed in the meja by 'spokesmen'? Lots and
lots of reasons given how it's actually your fault. They then bring in an
expert who hasn't actually heard the programme who then gives lots more
general information.
