A new remote control?
Anyone know of an easy to use programmable remote control? Having recently
upgraded most of the stuff in my house I now have a remote for TV, VCR, DVD recorder, Hi-Fi, set top box and... my gas fire. Ideally I would programme all of the main functions into a single remote control so that I would only have to use the proper ones for doing adjustments etc. Can anyone recommend such a remote? |

The ones I have found are the One4All Mosaic and the Sony RMAV3000T The Mosaic is priced at around £80 while the Sony is £130. Has anyone any experience of either of these or any other? |

a 'Universal' one 20 quid from local shop A smart answer but sadly also a crap answer. £20 worth of universal remote will not work with most of what I've got because they're only progranned with big standard studd like Philips, Panasonic, etc. Once you go upmarket they will not work. For what I want I'll need something programmable. |

Any decent universal will allow you to program it from it from the existing remotes using the 'nose to nose' method Err... I realise that, hence I'm wanting one. What I need is a low down on the various types available. Philips, for instance, do one which retails at over £200. I don't mind paying that sort of dosh but is it worth it? |

In my opinion it's not, but I imagine this will be a matter of preference. Having owned a Philips Pronto for a while now I find I really don't like LCD touch screen input and am intending to replace it with a hard key control sometime soon, many folk however, love said remote. Having not used any other universal remotes I'm not really in a position to advise, but can point you towards a good information source http://www.remotecentral.com. -- Dave Cunningham dave at upsilon org uk PGP KEY ID: 0xA78636DC |

You can buy a PDA for less than 200ukp and that can be a proper universal remote AND a whole lot more. -- Spyros lair: http://www.mnementh.co.uk/ |||| Maintainer: arm26 linux Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons, for you are tasty and good with ketchup. |

I've got the Wharfedale (the blue one) one from Richer Sounds for about 70 quid. It's narrow enough that you can hold it with one hand and use it. It has Touchscreen keyboard. Programs nicely and works all 6 of my boxes. |

I can understand why people dislike LCD touchscreen- my HK TC1000 sometimes drives me nuts (accidentally press the wrong area- or it thinks I did, and I have to look at the screen) but I like the ability to use custom buttons & layouts; something which is impossible with a hard-buttoned remote. Unless the unused hard buttons disappear into the unit when I go into a activity. ;-) Although most of the time it's OK- just try to cut down on the complexity on the screen, just have the minimum buttons in a activity. |
