Last year 2017 was the centenary of the birth of Ella Fitzgerald, probably the greatest female jazz singer of all time.

To celebrate, the big band in which I play tenor saxophone, put together a tribute project with our singer Ida and played ten concerts to capacity audiences. We used both original Ella Fitzgerald arrangements written by Nelson Riddle, and also arrangements written in 1940's style by members of our band.

In addition to Ida, and the nineteen-piece big band (five trumpets, four trombones, tuba, five saxes, four rhythm) we had a string section of 24 players, final year conservatory students.

We made a “project sampler CD” which is on sale at our concerts, although it was primarily intended for promotion and PR purposes, and was sent to local promoters and radio stations within the EBU.

The CD was made entirely “in house”. Amongst our playerss we are fortunate to have people with skills in production, arranging, recording, editing, mixing, mastering, CD reprocation, photography, graphic design, copyrwriting (liner notes) translation, copyright (legal) and sleeve printing, so no external help was needed. We are pleased with the result.

Of the CDs intended for UK broadcasters, a few remain unallocated, so if anyone in this group would like a complimentary CD (including postage) please send name and address, with the message “Ella CD, please” to our band secretary at: .

I'm rather curious about the word "reprocation" which you've used not
only in the paragraph above but also in a follow up to Brian Gaff's post
entitled "Some CED/DVD writers are better than others".

Try as I might to find a definition of this word using both duckduckgo
and google, it apparently doesn't exist. Just now I've right clicked on
the above word, underlined as a spelling error, to look at Pan's
spellchecker alternative suggestions which includes the word
"replication" which I suspect is the word you intended.

Can you kindly confirm that this is the right 'guess' or else offer up
the definition for the apparently newly minted word, "reprocation"?

I heard the word used at a technical exhibition by the the technical manager of a European CD plant. It seems to be a term in common within the industry.

Are you sure the word used wasn't "replication", as you don't seem to
be able to define it yourself but "CD replication" is a commonly
available service and (from context) seems to be what you're talking
about.

The term is also shortened to "repro", and is used here in Scandinavia, as is "replication". People involved in CD mastering and manufacture are careful in their terminology. The word "copy" used by the public is never used. "Duplication" would be a good term but that was used for cassette manufacture, and "clone" is rather quaint:-) A CD is in fact a "pressing" but that term is reserved for vinyl.

I can imagine a Japanese becoming very confused with reproduction and
replication, especially if their use gets confused.

Google says: reprocation: 216 results.
reproduction 103 million
replication: 23 million.

216 is a surprisingly low number for a real word. Compare with the 3/4
million for EFM CD, which even has its own wiki page, and must be as
obscure.

Indeed. But I see no confusion if the two words mean the same thing.

Let's put it down to local use:-)

Nevertheless I hope it will no detract from your enjoyment of the CD
which is the subject of this thread.

The recording is multitrack, and masters are edited together
from several takes. I mentioned this on another group, the members of
which are now busy trying to find the edits. Apart from the obvious ones,
(for example piano intro into main take) no-one has with any certainty
found a single splice (and there are nearly thirty of them) One person
with very good ears did spot that there were two different pianos.

Maybe a bottle of champagne for anyone who can hear all the edits? :-))
