Default Cambridge P50 help

Have had a Cambridge P50 amp for some years and decided to plug it in.
Everything seems to work, except that the tape monitor seems weird;
selecting the tape monitor, the balance as well as the volume do not
work.
The only way to control the volume when listening to a cassette is via
the tape gain adjust knob in the back of the amp.
Using the aux input for cassettes works fine.
Is this normal? How is the tape monitor supposed to be used?

Just a guess. Are you using a 5 pin to 5 pin DIN lead? It's just possible
that if it were a reversal type it's mixed up the inputs and outputs, and
the tape outs aren't buffered. If it's all on phonos, ignore this. ;-)
But can you record to the cassette in the normal way off the amp?
