Maybe. But bear in mind its old now, so the (two) DACs would be
perhaps 20ukp each and it has TWO custom wound transformers in it.

The point being that its innards don't equate to its price.

Which is also why I would be happy to pay up to about 5ukp for a CD (thats in the region of 50-100 times the cost of making it) or up to about 12ukp for a 3disc DVD set or something (also about 100 odd times the cost of the manufacturing).

How much 'raw material' goes into whatever you produce?

None whatsoever. I charge an infinite markup. ;-)

So that's the hypocrite accusation sorted.

I rather think not.

I'm not the person who keeps going on about how much the CD costs to
produce. I haven't seen many comments from you about how much the
production costs for the material on the CD.

Im sure its not cheap, but CDs sell in the *millions*.

featurettes cost money to create.

Not very much for most, judging by the quality. a lot look like they
were filmed by the directors mates 5 year old daughter.

And you know how much I suppose? You appear to be an expert on these
matters.

Come on. many of the 'featurettes are clearly shot using consumer grade DV gear. its blatantly obvious how cheap they are to make. If theres more than an hour of actual work gone into the interviews on the Lost In Space DVD I'd be amazed. the guy who did the cover art for the box probably spent more time on his job than that.

Come to think of it you seem to want people to think you are
an expert on everything.

Not at all.

I wasnt in that case. Pray explain why you see adverts like 'Film XXX
Video: 8.99 DVD 15.99' ?

Duh! Product, not content.

still, a clear proof that well over 30% of the price of the DVDs is pure profit.
Not to mention their acting would have been no better.

So apart from your expertise in all other matters you are now a
clairvoyant?

Nope. but to quote a line from Galaxy Quest (which I paid for on DVD at *full* price, purely because its just such a fantastic film and I wanted it *that second*) 'It doesnt take a good actor to recognise a bad one.'

Not to me. I dont know the names of most movie stars and I dont care.

It's just as well that you are in the film business then isn't it. You
wouldn't last 5 mins.

I dont *want* to be in the movie industry, and Im certain I wouldnt last 5 mins. Its well out of control financially, and I dont think anything but a reality check will fix it.

The fact that I have no creative talent whatsoever wouldnt help much either. (thats distinct from other types of talent - I am a decent enough musician albeit I only play one instrument, and Im not alf bad with computers if I do say so myself.)

If they act well, thats all that matters to me.

So young, so naive.

*I* dont need to care how much they cost or what sort of temper tantrums they throw. All I want to see is good acting in my movies. And I dont care who from either, as long as they can deliver.

MOST of the time, yes (and I wrote that earlier, this is not a
backtrack). In the case of LoTR, the special edition of TTT was much
better.

I thought you didn't buy it. More cheapo film watching again?

I downloaded it. When the proper boxed set comes out (preferably the special edition one) I'll be buying it though.

So far I have the EE of both released LOTR DVDs, I have no
intention of buying a 'special box set version'.

bully for you.

I can watch them anytime I like. Whereas you are a slave to your
desire for something better.

No Im not.

Besides, even if I DIDNT have a copy to watch I still wouldnt be a 'slave' as I *always* have the option to go buy it (except I dont think you CAN buy TRoTK yet, so actually Im doing better than you are...

As for the better sound, what are you going to do play them back
through your DAC?

For now. sometime I'll get a better one with more channels but this one does well enough for now.

I play my personal films on my linux box (which is where I have the
DAC and nice monitor hooked up.

So why would a version with "better" sound make any difference then?
The existing versions already have DTS ES 6.1 etc, what are you
expecting to be better.

In the case of LoTR probably nothing in the case of the soundtrack.

They are already the extended version with
superb encoding so how are you going to get a better image especially
using some software player?

Xine provides a superb picture - easily the equal of any standalone hardware player.

You always seem to want better without actually having the means to
benefit from it.

The means can be aquired, and if my source is not up to it, the upgrade would be worthless.

family films are played on the PS2 on the TV.

Which is notorious as a ****e DVD player.

Who cares? it does the job for the kids, and its good enough for the odd film in the evening.

In the case of LOTR how is it possible to describe existing versions
as crap in comparison to something that doesn't even exist?

The existing versions of LoTR are (having seen one of them only) apparently superb. however I want a boxed set, all the same looking, and with all the extra scenes and such that they add when they make the 2nd gen boxed sets (typically).

I wouldnt expect content on a 10p CD. that was my point. Can you
read?

Yes you would expect content, that's why you'd "demand 10 per disc".

WTF are you on about?

As to MP3s... I have perhaps 150 CDs (not counted), so about 1500
tracks. I just counted my mp3 collection at almost 6000 tracks, 1500
of which came from my CD collection.

How many of your CD collection came from your MP3 collection though?
Is that 150 legitimate CDS?

Yes. what would be the point in a CD burnt from mp3s ?

39.99, actually, and you can check for yourself in tescos.

You quoted 29.99 at the start of this. Please make your mind up.

Typo. wanna make something of it ?

When was the typo? now, or earlier? So your "actually" was because of
1 penny?

1 penny?

You have a habit of doing that. The conversation starts off with real
world **** then you wander off into a theoretical world.

The high end of the real world doesnt have problems with jitter. (the genuine high end that is, not the merely overpriced high end)
