Some ppl have reported that the rubber cones for the EX71 can come
off in your ear...any experience of this?

No, not in about a year's worth of use.

But I can tell you from personal experience NEVER to try putting the the
cones from Etymotic earphones onto Koss "the Plug" earphones. I did;
the cones came off deep in my ears, and as no one else was at home I had
to drive to my local hospital in considerable pain to get them removed.
Worse than the pain was the embarrassment of having to tell the doctor
what I'd done!
